I don't always take restaurant advice from a cartoon tire man, but when I do, I end up with frozen crab. Stick to selling tires, Michelin Man.
Here's my complete review of Sornthong Pochana.
Female Raw Crab (1/5)
I give the frozen female crab with Thai-style sauce a 'crabby' 2 out of 5. It was served to me frozen. I was told to eat it frozen to avoid getting sick, but the result was like chewing on ice, and as it thawed it was disappointing mushy texture and slightly bitter roe. The Thai sauce was tasty, but it overpowered the delicate flavour of the crab. While I appreciate the concern for freshness, maybe it's time to let this crab go and focus on serving up some fresher catches.
Noodles with fried crab (2/5)
I had high hopes for the noodles with fried crab, but it turned out to be a shell of a dish. The crab was MIA in flavour, and the noodles needed a pinch of salt and a dash of personality. There was nothing wrong with the dish but it needs a serious seasoning intervention. I objectively found the street food at Khlong Toei Market tastier, and for a fraction of the cost. The market food is salty and punchy and nourishing. This had no personality.
Snow Fish (Alaska Black Cod) (2/5)
The Snow Fish (Alaska Black Cod) had good flavour, but the texture was a bit on the mushy side and lacked salt within the fish. It seems like it may have been previously frozen and not dried properly before cooking. The fish was then seared and served in a sauce which had all the salt. Perhaps a dry seasoning would have been a better choice to let the fish shine. All in all, it was a decent dish, but could have been executed better in terms of texture and presentation.
Gigantic oysters (1/5)
I'm a huge oyster fan so this made me sad. The gigantic oysters (gigas oysters) had a clear and unmistakable fishy taste. Instead of the expected briny, oceanic flavour, they were overly strong and fishy. I'm all for trying new things, but I draw the line at risking my digestive system for the sake of adventure. As a tourist, I don't have the luxury of a backup wardrobe, so I had to pass on these fishy little monsters. I also remembered in 2019 when I ate a fish that resembled a bright blue surprised Christopher Walken in Phuket, and I got food poisoning so bad that I saw my ancestors, so I wasn't going to play seafood Russian roulette with your oysters.
River Prawns (3/5)
These have real potential! Decent flavour from charcoal grill and head butter, but needed some salt. Coarse salt would have been perfect.
Coconut drink (2/5)
It tasted like someone who just learned how to make smoothies and watered it down too much. You know what I'm talking about, right? And I hate to break it to you, but I've had better coconut smoothies on the side of the road in Chiang Mai...
Read moreThis is a very very old Chinese restaurant at this location. For many many years, is a favourite place for the expatriates as well as rich local Thais nearby as there are many many luxury apartments in this area. Tourists are less, Koreans are dominant foreigners, and locals are still the most.
However, this does not mean this place is expensive. This is a good quality restaurant with reasonable price. If comparing with Somboon, the tourists famous Chinese Restaurant, this place is better price and serve more quality food.
Thirty something years ago, here is a sloppy restaurant but is always crowded for their food and value. At the time, all are outdoor sittins or no air conditioning. As this restaurant only opens at evening and there is no parking lot provided, cars were all illegal parked on Rama IV just for this restaurant and people are patiently waiting to be seated. Now, the restaurant has been totally renovated but the localised touch is still there and most important, still as tasty as years ago. Parking can be resolved by the Big C parking lot, free for 3 hours.
For the fish lovers, this is one of the rare places in Thailand to serve Black big mouth Sleeper Gobi fish (chined is 笋壳魚). This fish is a delicacy in Hong Kong. Many years ago, Hong Kong used to import from Thailand but now was successful to raise this in fish farms. This fish has to be consumed swimming fresh and is great for Deep Fried with White Soy Sauce. Steam is also acceptable.
Tried the Fresh Oyster imported. Great value. Baht360 for 3.
For Vegetables, must try the Sprouts of Bitter Guard (Menu stated Pumpkin is wrong. )
Mantis Shrimps (濑尿虾) is now also available. Of course, for such Hong Kong delicacy, it is not cheap.
For Crab, curry crabs is great. Order the small size is the most valuable as the has different price per kilo for S/M/L. Order two Small is same price as one Big.
The Pork Satay is also a must to try. It is also a delicacy in this restaurant.
Highly recommend this restaurant for the food lovers if you are nearby or on Sunday(traffic is too bad in this area so it is not worth the while to be caught in traffic for hours). Reservations are...
