I had lunch at House of Smooth Curry during my recent stay at The Athenee Bangkok, and it was great! The service was warm and attentive, and the decor and overall atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely.
And the food was excellent! I ordered two of my favourite Thai dishes, the massaman beef curry and pineapple fried rice with prawns, and both were two of the best renditions of these I've tried. I loved the sweetness of both dishes, which was still perfectly balanced with the salty and sour flavours also present. The beef was tender and well cooked, with a rich curry sauce. The fried rice was full of pineapple, raisins and cashews, a great combination of flavours and textures. Even the welcome snack of prawn crackers with chilli paste were super tasty. It is a restaurant I will certainly return to again!
Update on return visit: My second visit to The House of Smooth Curry, on my second stay at the Athenee. I visited with my husband this time and insisted we have lunch here after my previous fantastic meal, and I was not disappointed. I had to have the pineapple fried rice with prawns again, which is absolutely amazing, and we also tried the grilled pork spare ribs, which were equally good. The rice is full of flavour and textures, from the cashews to the raisins to the chunks of fresh pineapple, and the perfect combination of sweet and savoury, as you'd expect from excellent Thai food. The pork ribs were incredibly tender, just fell off the bone, and the sticky sweet sauce reminded me of a BBQ sauce, and was just delicious. I also had my favourite cocktail ever, the Athenee Hugo, which is so good! The service was also great, friendly and warm and welcoming, and very attentive. Great atmosphere and decor too. I will definitely be dining here again on...
Read moreDining at the House of Smooth Curry at the Athenee Hotel in Bangkok was a truly delightful experience. This charming restaurant seamlessly blends traditional Thai decor with a luxurious modern touch, creating an inviting and elegant atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally courteous and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience.
I had the pleasure of trying Chef Ton's Mother Curry, a dish that I imagine holds a special place in the chef's heart. This curry featured minced chicken meat cooked with tamarind, toasted herbs, and banana blossom. I particularly appreciated that it wasn't overloaded with coconut milk, allowing the delicate flavours of the spices to shine through.
Overall, the House of Smooth Curry is highly recommended for anyone looking to impress visitors with an authentic Thai cuisine dining experience. It's an excellent choice for those seeking both the charm of traditional Thai flavors and the comfort of a luxurious setting.
The Tom Yum Goong was another highlight, boasting a superb blend of sourness, spiciness, and savory seafood flavor, courtesy of the fresh and succulent prawns. Each spoonful was a harmonious balance of flavors, making it a memorable dish.

Read moreWhat a lovely evening! I fully enjoyed my solo dinner here and thought that what I ordered was beautifully cooked and presented.
The restaurant is known for their Thai royal cuisine so I figured to select options of that theme. Comparison is the thief of joy so it felt right to select Thai dishes that couldn’t be compared to a night market fare or regular Thai restaurant at the mall.
I decided to go with the lotus flower salad and the crab curry (would have gotten the flower shaped dumplings if they hadn’t run out). Both dishes were delicious, and worth the money. Great presentation and great taste! The only thing that was not quite up to par was the cocktail; for 420 the Thai Tea was strong but not special or very tasty. The rest of the cocktails also did not look particularly interesting so I would skip out on alcohol.
Finished with a hot glass of their butterfly pea tea which was not sweet, lightly earthy, and a nice warm finish.
Notes on the spice: it’s listed as two chili’s but I found it to be just a good amount of heat—hot but not too hot (note that I love spicy curries!)
Notes on service: they gave me free cracker prawns and a welcome tea, which were delicious. Bring a sweater as it does get cold.
Notes on portions: I missed lunch this day and felt full but not bloated from the curry and salad; if you are a party of four or more you should consider the portions may not be big enough for...
