The menu is the culinary equivalent of a polite nod from a stranger. So thoroughly inoffensive it could be used to broker peace talks. Flavourfulness, it seems, has been mistaken for quality, as if a dash of lemongrass and a whisper of galangal were enough to catapult the dish into the Michelin guide. The food struts onto the table with all the pomp of a minor royal at a village fête. Pretentious, yes, but mercifully priced like something you'd find in a posh shopping centre food court, courtesy of the ever-ambitious iBerry group.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not the sort of place you'd breathlessly recommend to The Times, unless you were writing a column titled “Places That Are Fine, I Suppose”. But it’s also not so catastrophically bad that you'd need to call in the Marines to restore order. The service? Impeccable. So good, in fact, it makes you wonder if the staff were trained by retired butlers from Buckingham Palace.
As for the décor, well, it’s kitschy. Think of it as your well-heeled aunt’s living room after a trip to the Jim Thompson gift shop. But compared to the touristy wasteland of the main Yaowarat strip, it’s practically Versailles.
In summary: a semi-authentic Thai experience that won’t offend your taste buds, your wallet, or...
Read moreBy far, I must say this is one of my favorite Michelin experience in Bangkok. It was priced right with the quality of food and the atmosphere was great in the heart of Chinatown.
I went for the set menu because I wanted to try out their popular dish, it was good that it was 2 of us so we managed to order 2 set menu which comes with 2 choices of stirfry and curry, so we got to try all 4 different flavour.
There were many courses in the set menu from appetizer to different side dishes and mains and desserts, with a very interesting palate cleanser too. Presentation was on point and flavour was distinct.
Every dish brought together very deep and rich flavour of Thai herbs and freshness of the ingredients.
It was interesting that we observed the customers were mostly foreigners however my friend who is Thai and also self confessed picky about food love this dinner.
This is also a place that I would love to go back again because it is really that worthwhile to go on the culinary journey as you can tell we ate our dinner from day till night over great conversations too, a...
Read moreWhat an experience! I went to Bangkok this time and wanted to find that 'secret' restaurant to try new food. I stumble upon Phukej and it was exactly what I was looking for. I never had, or even heard of the Chineses-Southern Thai food, and Phukej did set a high bar for me since it is not just a usual way of preparation of the food, but with the fine culinary technique.
The place is relatively small but cozy. The atmosphere is great. A lot of historic and vintage style decor. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The head chef came to chat a bit with us. He was very eager to answer our question about the food with passion. You know it is good when people really care and proud of what they are doing.
Lastly the food. Everything we had were delicious and very well cooked and prepared. It is a fine dining and with a very friendly price. I would recommend anyone who want to try this type of food or looking to have a great fine dining experience in Bangkok. I would stop by again next time I'm in Bangkok.
Extra point: The toilet is very...
