The Best Oyster Omelette in Yaowarat? Nai Mong Hoi Thod Lives Up to the Hype
If you’re a fan of oyster omelettes, Nai Mong Hoi Thod is a must-visit spot in Yaowarat Chinatown. Conveniently located just across the road from Wat Mangkon MRT station on the Blue Line, this iconic eatery has been serving its signature dish for over 30 years. The buzzing atmosphere, with tables spilling onto the sidewalk, is hard to miss.
Nai Mong Hoi Thod has earned Michelin awards from 2018 to 2024, cementing its reputation as one of Bangkok’s finest street food destinations. The star of the menu is the crispy oyster omelette, also known as "orluo." They also offer soft omelettes and a mussel version, with sizes ranging from small to XL and prices from 100 to 500 baht. While it may be pricier than other spots, its quality justifies the cost.
The wait can be long due to the restaurant’s popularity, but good things take time. I ordered the 200-baht crispy oyster omelette, and when it arrived, I was amazed. The portions were generous, with 2/3 of the plate packed with plump, juicy oysters and the rest featuring a thick, crispy batter. The omelette is fried in lard, creating a delicious crunch, and comes with a side of tangy chili dipping sauce.
The first bite was perfection. The batter was crispy and fragrant, while the oysters were fresh, sweet, and incredibly large. The combination of textures and flavors was extraordinary, making every bite a delight. It’s easy to see why Nai Mong Hoi Thod is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
Eating the omelette hot is essential—it’s when the flavors and textures truly shine. The vibrant street-side setting and exceptional food make this an unforgettable experience. For me, it’s hands down the best crispy oyster omelette I’ve...

🍳 Crispy Oyster Omelette (4.25/5) Recommended by Michelin as a Bib Gourmand since 2018 and nestled in the Chinatown, this was a unique experience of savoring oyster omelette. The base was undeniably crispy and fragrant, with a pleasing texture that wasn't tough at all. The oysters on top were substantial, albeit not exceptionally juicy. However, the sauce complemented the crispy base perfectly (my attention was fully devoted to that crispy egg base instead of the oyster). While the oysters didn't stand out, I found immense satisfaction in the overall dish. It's a must-try, but I wish the chili provided had a bit more kick to it.
🥚 Fried Oyster Omelette (2.25/5) This dish was rather ordinary. The oysters, while sizable, lacked juiciness, and the omelette lacked that enticing fragrance (wok hei).
☀️ Ambience [1.75/5] The interior of the shop was uncomfortably hot because the cooking wok was situated near the entrance. It made for a less-than-ideal dining experience. Sitting outside might offer a slightly better atmosphere.
🤝 Service [4.25/5] The owner and staff were friendly, although they faced challenges when speaking English. However, since the menu was printed in English, it wasn't difficult for us to order by pointing at the items on the menu.
💲 Value [4/5] Priced at 100 Baht per plate, considering the generous portions and the substantial size of the oysters provided by the shop, I found it to be quite...
Read moreIf you'd like the crispy mussel omelette, don't arrive after midday. Although open til evening, they run out of crispy mussel omelette by mid-day, as they deep-fry only a limited quantity of mussels in advance, and not during the day.
After that they offer either a crispy omelette topped with wet-fried oysters and greens in a thick sauce, or the alternative crispy oyster omelette which is made with fresh oysters, so not as crispy, more like a normal seafood omelette.
We had a small crispy oyster omelette (Baht 100) which was wet and undercooked, greasy, a little brown on the outside. The flour and egg hadn't been properly mixed, leaving a sticky wet mess in the centre of the omelette. The oysters were fresh and juicy.
Small fried rice with crab Baht 100 was good but rather bland, Chinese-style, and crab was fresh.
I wouldn't return for either of these dishes.
The rice arrived around 40+ minutes, the omelette around 50+ minutes after ordering. Whilst a stream of takeaway customers came and went, sit-down...
