There's a lot of touristy food places around charging westerner prices - we wanted to be where locals were dining at and this was the spot! We came across Yoy Pochana while on the car to places and we just had to check it out.
NO REGRETS. Prices were reasonable for the quality, food was authentic and served hot! We got what was familiar to us in Singapore and we enjoyed ourselves a ton.
Basil rice / Pad Krapow was one of the best I've had in Thailand. Generous servings of holy basil made it super smoky and delicious. If you can't take spice, do ask for less chilli.
Tom Kha soup (aka baby tom yum) was lovely and close to what we have in SG but definitely cheaper with a ton of ingredients. YUMMY.
Tofu with bean sprouts were damn good too. Tons of smoky flavour and not too salty. Recommended!
My partner had his pork dishes - Garlic pork and omelette and was happy with them too.
Overall yummy index: 10/10! Great selection of thai dishes too (no western food so yes this is a sign the place is catered to locals)
Some tips for the curious tourists:
place is clean enough, if you dont mind the slight heat it's very worth trying
Ask for an english menu. They have it. There are pictures too so if you dont know what things are, just go with the...
Quiet Monday Bank Holiday night in the old town, all places we planned to eat closed so we asked our barman at Dibuk House(awesome cocktails) where he would go to eat and followed his advice. Dont let the canteen look put you of, this eatery was Simply divine. Clearly a place for locals rather than tourists, we had spicy Chinese sausage salad(served room temperature, umami, sweet and a little heat with great dressing), Venus clams in roasted chill(deep savoury flavour on tender morsels), Tom Kha Gai(hot and sour, creamy chicken and coconut soup with a supreme depth of flavour) and finally some deep fried breaded prawns(our backup in case we didn't enjoy something, crispy, crunchy coating with a sweet dipping sauce). Every element of the meal was flavoursome and perfectly prepared. Best meal we've had in Thailand so far , add in a large beer and wine cooler(v retro) and we left happy, completely stuffed and at a tiny cost of less than 700 bhat(around 15 gbp). Go here,...
Read moreI ordered crispy catfish stir-fried with holy basil. What I got was chili and garlic that hadn’t been pounded finely as they should be. A proper pad krapow requires pounding chili and garlic together until fine, but instead, I received crispy catfish stir-fried with holy basil where the chili was cut into pieces and the garlic was sliced. As for the “crispy” catfish, it should have been crispy as its name suggests, but what I got seemed like catfish fried just enough to be cooked, with no crispiness at all. Very disappointing — I’ve eaten at this place before and it used to be...
