I have seen Entitled Sons several times before and they have always been very good. But tonight they knocked all their previous performances out of the park. They were superb. It wasn't difficult to put one's finger on what made this performance so much better. For the first time they were playing literally on the big stage, and to a big crowd. These guys are all about the performance and at last they had the environment to make that count. I did have my reservations at the start when they came on to the screams of the girls at the front. Inwardly I groaned and thought this could be like some boy band concert where overexcited girls just scream all night and you can't hear anything. But it soon settled down.
I should point out that there is nothing wrong with a band appealing to teenage girls. Before you get all sniffy I would offer as evidence the Beatles. They did always play live to besotted squealing young girls and Paul McCartney was a total heartthrob, difficult as it is now to imagine when one sees the croaking pensioner that he is. And the Entitled Sons are all good looking boys so a move to get on board the schoolgirl following is probably a shrewd move (and yes there were a decent number of teenage boys along too, but just when I had seen them before it would have been 50/50 gender split and probably under a hundred watching).
So what makes them so special in my books? Well first I like guitar bands. And second I think they have a string of very distinctive songs with strong hooks. But as I said they are very much a live band. Lead singer Charlie has a terrific rock voice, just the right amount of gravel. And has personality to burn. Untrammeled by a guitar he is just a superb frontman, bounding around the stage with great energy. And normally when you see a band with such a frontman, your attention is inextricably drawn to him and the band are background figures that you register but don't focus on. But Entitled Sons feel like they are increasingly a band with two frontmen, Charlie and his teenage brother Raffey on lead guitar. Although he says nothing, his guitar speaks volumes and his movement around the stage means your focus is on two guys not one.
And then there is the dynamic, as it appears on stage. I think everyone likes to see a band that seem to get on, and like each other, and are out there enjoying what they do. This lot, being four brothers with dad on bass, have that nice friendly unity. Charlie is always bounding around hugging the others and having a brief chat....
Read moreLast night, February 28th, brought forth a regrettable incident. In the line of ticket holders, having pre-purchased mine online, I encountered a security guard at the venue who was astonishingly impolite and confrontational. Upon requesting my ID, I presented my digital ID, to which he bluntly refused, insisting only on physical forms, an outdated requirement. Retrieving my driver's license from my wallet, complete with photo, birth date, and CPF, a valid and genuine document, he abruptly declared I was denied entry, offering no explanation when questioned.
His repeated assertions, delivered in unclear English, left me bewildered, especially as a non-native speaker. Despite displaying my student ID and post-grad status, his dismissive attitude persisted, indicating it was a "student event," further adding to the confusion. At 30 years old, with a valid ticket, I found myself unjustly barred from entry without any coherent rationale, ultimately leaving and missing out on the event with my friends out of concern for my safety in challenging his arbitrary decision.
This unwarranted treatment by a security personnel marred my experience and warrants urgent review by the establishment's management, as such behavior is unacceptable and tarnishes their reputation. I will not patronize nor recommend this venue until corrective measures are taken to address the disrespectful and distressing conduct exhibited by certain...
Read moreThe comedy show was hilarious, some really good acts. Naturally had some bits that weren't too funny, but overall thought it was very good!
Was very disappointed with the club night afterwards however. We went away for a few drinks while they were preparing, and got there an hour or so after it had started. It was a rainy/cold night, so naturally everyone had coats. We got in the cloakroom queue and like good British people waited for about 30 minutes. Then the unthinkable happened... they ran out of space. Now first of all you'd think on a night with the aforementioned conditions they would have prepared with sufficient coat space, as they should assume everyone they let in would have at least one coat. Nope! And instead of catering for the 30 or so people left holding their heavy wet coats and scarves, by maybe forming a pile somewhere, or searching for some more space, we were simply told it was "tough luck". Great service right there. So begrudgingly we along with everyone else had to carry our big heavy coats around with us all night...
To be honest this put a dampener on the whole event, which was a real shame! I wont remember Komedia now as the place that made me laugh, but rather the place "I just wanted to get out of because I had to carry my coat...
