I'd like to rate this place higher as it has great potential, but, we went there tonight for an end of evening drink and the experience was far from delightful. Apart from expensive drinks, which I can live with as not everywhere offers specials on doubles, the reception was frosty. The bar was busy (note it's small) so I asked if we could sit in the back area, I was told no as they were setting up for breakfast. Thanks! Couldn't they do that once the bar was empty? So, we paid over the odds to have to stand, great! The man behind the bar then grumbled about getting ice, is that really an unreasonable request? He then proceeded to clear down the bar, before 11, without warning to the several occupants of the bar. While we finished our drinks, note I didn't say enjoyed, not allowed at the Griffin, two customers asked for more drinks, both were told the pub was shut. They took it well, but surely when the bar is full you give people warning?? Anyway, would I go back, not at all, and my 2 stars...
Read moreThe Griffin Inn is a well located pub that offers clean and comfortable accommodation for a decent price. It does have a small bar area and serves food, but due to its proximity to the city centre, you are a bit spoiled for choice in the eating and drinking department. The staff were friendly and great at offering suggestions on where to go and what to do. Felt welcomed when I got back after a long day walking around in Bath, and although it can get busy in the bar, it's not rammed like other pubs might be. Accommodation was comfortable and well serviced each day. My only quibbles were that the shower could have been a bit hotter, and if you can, try and get rooms on the second floor or towards the rear of the pub. Mine faced onto the main road and was above the bar area so could be quite noisy in the evening but a pair of headphones resolved that. Despite that, it was a great base to go out and explore or to rest up and have a chat in the bar. All on all, I'd probably book it again if I'm...
Read moreOur recent visit to The Griffin Inn left us with a rather lukewarm impression. While the staff were generally helpful and attentive, the food unfortunately didn't quite live up to expectations, especially considering the prices. My wife opted for the ploughman's (£17), which sadly featured a few crackers that were noticeably stale and cheese that had begun to dry out. While there was a generous portion of bread and some ham, the overall offering felt somewhat underwhelming for the cost. I chose the steak and ale pie, served with chunky chips and some greens. The pie itself was decent enough, but again, the price point felt a little steep for what it was. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, although one of the staff members seemed a little weary, though not impolite in any way. Overall, our experience at The Griffin Inn was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly memorable either. With a few tweaks to the freshness and value of the food, it has the potential to be...
