The Place — Restaurant in City of Edinburgh

Atmosphere - Came for a coffee after being recommended it by a few friends because it was such a big space and perfect for buggies also has fantastic views across Inverleith Park and great outside balcony seating ^_^. Also as a new cafe and someone who has been in the coffee industry for 6 years and worked in hospitality for over 13 now I was excited to try a new cafe in Stockbridge.

I will say I have given 3 stars because this place is NOT a cafe it is a rugby club house and has quite a substantial bar setup. My review is based solely on the cafe aspect of The Place.

Sadly the size is probably all it has going for it in terms of a cafe... the food menu is a little lack luster and very minimal and the Oat Flat Whites we ordered were poor; The coffee was burnt and over extracted, they were too hot (a flat white should be heated to no hotter than 55C°) and the milk consistency was dreadful far to foamy and not glossy at all. For reference, I do not put sugar in my coffee ever but had to on this occasion to mask the flavour.

I would suggest you either get trained baristas in/train your staff to make coffee. Equally your oat milk is not good, I would suggest Oatly or Minor Figures or Mills Milk Organic Oat Milk. Cheaper is not better.

Service - Leaves something to be desired. When we arrived we weren't actually acknowledged at all ; the place was not busy in fact they had 4 tables seated 1 indoors and 3 outside all of which had been serviced already. The speed of service was decent and we received our Oat Flat Whites shortly after ordering though as I stated above they were not good.

Overall I would probably come back if there was a large group of us with buggies as there is nowhere in Stockbridge that can accommodate a large number of parents ither than this place. If I was just by myself however, I would choose another...

I had came in on one Saturday a while back during one of the 6 nation Saturdays! Rugby atmosphere was great! Food was fast and delicious. Rugby lads were RUDE! Especially towards staff as I was queuing behind for the bar. I couldn’t help but overhear! Comments about female bar staff and everything you wouldn’t want to listen at all. Good on the bar staff for keeping grounded! It couldn’t be me. The staff were so friendly towards me and with my pup and even offered a treat and water! Which was lovely! Hope to come back soon :) place has so much potential except the toxic rugby culture has to go..Would be more willing to come back if they weren’t there to be honest! Over priced for what you get. Lots of potential.

Had to clear glasses off our table, saw other tables just have glasses pile up…

Food quality is absolutely embarrassing! Brought friends to the club for the first time and can’t even product hot wedges. Previous occasions have let me down too and led to refunds being issued.

Can’t do a margarita because they have run out of margarita mix. For the price one would hope that it would be freshly made.

Such a shame as could be a great venue.

Charging 5 star prices but offering 1 star quality. Management needs to realise that just because they are based in Stockbridge they can’t charge...
