Update April '25. Preferred chippy was closed- infact they all were, so give Paignton Pier Chippy another go. 2 x mini f&c with a curry sauce. Only place where 'mini' truly means mini. For £12 a portion, just not good enough. Fish was just to thin to be cod, it was toddler size and overcooked (although we waited whilst it was freshly cooked)? Six more chips would have been 33% more than was served in this portion. Tasted ok whilst eating, but still left a cloying after taste. This really will be our last visit. Not good enough quality and portion needs to be 25% bigger for the money charged, in my opinion. The restaurant was closed and these were ordered from the take away counter. Had to sit outside and wait (told 6m wait but was actually not far off 15m- good job it wasn't raining). Can't say I disliked (2) but it didn't make OK (3). 2.5* really.
Previous review-Been in a few times when we've take the grandkids on the pier. Nice clean f&c restaurant that has been award winning, so is on the higher price point. But imo there is a more consistent offering, about 35% cheaper not that far away that I'd always use in preference. Today's chips actually tasted a bit odd. The chips were golden fried and looked good, but I'm not sure if it was the potatoes used or what. Very earthy taste with and undertone of seafood. Like I say, odd. Cod is what cod is, quite tasteless, so it relies on the batter, which was ok. The portion size for a mini f&c is good, but then so it should be for the money. The 'other' I place I refer to always tastes good (as 'clean' as f&c can be) are good portion sizes and similar to here, are always cooked fresh to order. I can't say where the other place is, as this review would sound like a knock and plug,...
Read moreIt's bad enough finding a hair in your food,🤢🤢 but to then be treated so rudely by the cook was disgusting and embarrassing! I found a hair in my chips after eating more than half of my meal. I took it back to the counter and told the woman, she came back to my table and apologised. She asked if I would like a fresh batch of chips, to which I declined , she then asked if I would like a refund, I accepted a refund, I was also trying to keep it low key, as my husband was still eating. The woman then returned with a refund for the chips only! We had just paid £34.40 for 1 mini cod and chips, 1 large cod and chips and 1 portion of curry sauce plus a can of coke, I asked for a full refund for my meal and she said she'd have to go and check. A few minutes later, the cook came over and rudely stated that I had eaten all the cod, my reply was yes, but please can you just sort this out as I may vomit soon, ( I have a huge intolerance of foreign objects in my food, especially hair in my food) he rudely said go outside then. He very reluctantly gave me a refund for mini cod and chips, he then told me to leave his restaurant immediately, he also arrogantly asked my husband if he had enjoyed his meal. This man should not be near customers with an attitude like that. The other 3 young women who were there were lovely and 1 did apologise to me. I have eaten here several times before and it has been ok. It was not great this time though, apart from the hair in my food, the chips were not very warm the curry sauce was cold and although the fish was scorching hot,...
Read moreWe went a couple of times as we really like the place. Unfortunately in my second visit we were close to the kitchen and I could see that hygiene is not their best point. Although the fish is very nice, it was disgusting to see that in general they were touching parts of the kitchen without washing their hands, they were wearing gloves, but is not point to change them if you don’t wash your hands at all. We spend about 30-40 minutes there. You could see how a young boy was doing the fish after being using his phone with the same gloves or how the young boys were playing with the gloves to inflate them. The two young girls went to sort out the bin outside, using their gloves, when they came back they just swapped them for others, not even wash their hands or change their aprons after touching the bins. After that, they just change their gloves and continue serving people. Not even the use of alcohol gel, I felt that I wanted to vomit the food and couldn’t finish after seeing that. Next time, if you have an open kitchen at least you should make sure the hygiene levels are high, very lucky I don’t live in this area, otherwise I won’t recommend this...
