To set the scene I am not a fan of Chinese food in the UK period, it’s a subject that I could go on and on about at great lengths.
I have walked past this place many times, it is always busy with Chinese and other neighbouring nationalities dining.
As the saying goes “eat where the locals eat”.
Ever looked at the table next to you and wondered why you can’t find what they are eating on the menu?
If you are in the Taste of China, it probably isn’t on the menu!
On looking at the menu I notice it is full of westernised dishes, such as sweet and sour pork etc.
To prove the point to my wife, I ask the table across from us what they are eating, I know the answer, water morning glory and crispy belly pork! They confirm. I ask if they can tell me where on the menu this is, they laugh and say it is not, and probably not available to us.
I decide to ask anyway, although the pork is not on the menu they tell me that they have some but no water morning glory left. The table next to us joke saying, it’s only 12 pm, politics they say, “we recommend coming regularly and they may let you have the specials another time, after a few visits”.
At this point I felt like walking out!! If not for my hungry child and wife I would have, instead, I had a bowl of, Just ok noodle soup with crispy pork.
The dining experience here was not the best, and somewhat disappointing.
As far as the bowl of noodles that I had, they were ok, edible, I could have easily made them better at home, The bubble tea was good.
Ultimately this is a shame, rather than discriminating against nationalities, make the obviously delicious dishes available to everyone! If people ask for the generic Chinese restaurant dishes that they get from there local takeaway, tell them proudly that you cook real Chinese food, dishes that can be...
Read moreIt was our first time eating here, and we were not familiar with the dishes. The server urged us to order both a rice dish (she pointed to a picture that looks like a rice topping) and another triple roast with rice, saying there might not be enough rice for us. We explained several times that we were not too hungry and only wanted one rice dish with a separate viand. Despite this, she insisted. When the food arrived, we had far too much rice and not enough viand. To make matters worse, the meal itself doesn't taste good and we didn't even finish half our food. Overall, it was a disappointing experience - it ruined our day and we will never be...
Read moreMy family and friends have dined on many occasions in the Taste of China restaurant in High Street in the city of Leicester. We would like to express our most sincere thanks to the chef for the delicious and tasty food. The char siu and crispy pork, duckling and chicken, the stir fry noodles and vermicelli, won-ton and fish ball soup, stir fry vegetables, just to name a few. The refreshing fruit juices and chinese tea prepared by the waiting staff and their excellent services. The restaurant also caters for western palate. If anyone is looking for a satisfying, scrumptious and yummy meal, go to the Taste of China. You will never be...
