First time dining at The Butcher's Bar and Grill tonight!! My partner ordered the beef burger, our child ordered the American pancakes off the kid's menu, and I ordered the chicken burger.
My partner and I were very pleased with both burgers (we shared with one another and gave a bite). The beef burger was deliciously cooked in garlic, it's one of the very first flavour profiles that you taste when it hits your tongue. But just as soon as you've identified it and can feel the flavor of it coming in, it's gone. It's not an overwhelming garlicky flavour at all, which was a pleasant surprise! Just enough to make you notice and appreciate it, but then it's gone. And goodness, the cheese on the burger! Absolutely amazing! We wish we knew what it was!
My chicken burger also pleasantly surprised me by not being a fried chicken burger, but a grilled chicken burger! That's a first in a very long time for me, as normally I'm served a fried chicken patty. I loved it! So tender, juicy, and flavourful with the burger sauce! Both my partner and I took notice that the serving sizes for the burgers were honestly perfect, in our opinions. Not too large, not too small. The Goldilocks of burgers! We're used to restaurants serving large, or overly tall burgers, especially at "bar & grills" places. For once, we didn't feel overwhelmed by the size of the burger or the patties themselves. They were both a decent size, without being too much - and we both finished our burgers completely without feeling too stuffed! The steak chips were as great as ever, no complaints for either of us at all.
Our child got the American pancakes and absolutely adored them from the moment they were in front of him, to the moment it was an empty plate being pulled away. So fluffy, not overly sweet, and hit just the right spot for someone craving breakfast for dinner. The array of beautiful, fresh berries were his favourite part of the meal.
Our desserts were 2 chocolate fudge brownies + vanilla gelato, plus 1 single scoop of strawberry gelato. So delicious, just all around!! The brownies were larger than we anticipated they'd be, but they were a perfect size considering the perfectly average-sized portion that the burgers and chips were.
Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and hard-working. We felt looked after, without feeling too bothered. Many thanks to the lovely girl who served my family & I tonight. As for the atmosphere of the restaurant, we loved that there were bigger tables and chairs here (as compared to the previous food establishments that have been in this space in the past years). We felt like we could actually breathe and move about easily, without bumping into others nearby!
I also massively appreciated that, though they had a flatscreen TV in the corner of the room, it wasn't on. Instead, they had ambient music playing throughout at a noticable yet quiet level. I know it's going to be expected of bar & grills to have a TV, and to likely have it on, but I always take note and appreciate all the restaurants that don't. As a neurodivergent person on the neurological spectrum, I really don't like being bombarded by sounds when I'm out in public or sitting in a restaurant. The sounds of the people around me are usually overwhelming enough, nevermind also having music and TV going at the same time. And between the two, I'd much rather eat food at a restaurant with ambient/easy going music, than one that has the sounds of the TV on. So though it wasn't a huge part of our experience overall, it was something I noticed and liked!
We would absolutely love to come back again and try more from...
Read moreI had to think hard about this review as I didn’t want to be too harsh to a new business. I also want to be honest as it’s not cheap and I don’t want people to be disappointed when paying so much. In reality, it deserved 3 stars, but I’ve given 4 to reflect its newness and potential for improvement. I really hope that the teething troubles will be fixed as this could be a really great local restaurant!
Parking was tricky but that’s to be expected in the Newland area. We arrived 10 minutes early and were seated immediately. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately, the tables are so tightly packed in, we couldn’t even get into the seat at the table. We had to stand while we waited for the people at the other table to leave. Then we had to move our table and the next one so we could pull our chairs out. Fortunately we’re not big people, but it’s crazy how packed in the tables are. The place is very small and I understand why the owner would want as many tables as possible, but it’s just uncomfortable and not workable, it’ll put customers off. Towards the end of our meal, people sat at the next table. It felt like they were practically sat on our knees. We had planned to have dessert but left as it was uncomfortable sitting so close to strangers.
Our table hadn’t been cleaned properly so I had to use the only napkin on it, to wipe food away. The menus had food on them too and during our meal we had to kill 3 fruit flies.
Our drinks order was taken quickly and staff were friendly. Service throughout was timely. The mocha was absolutely gorgeous.
The Food! We had halloumi starters, which were presented beautifully and tasted nice. My son had the Rib Eye with chunky chips and onion rings. He said it was perfectly cooked and the best steak he had ever eaten! I had the lamb shank. Although the lamb was very tender, there was very little flavour. The mash was a beautiful texture but the gravy was so packed with flavour (mainly salt and pepper) it over powered the lamb and mash. I couldn’t finish the meal as my tastebuds couldn’t take the onslaught any longer. It was one of those gravy’s that on first taste you think it’s great, then you soon get tired and overwhelmed by the huge flavour. The dish was swimming in the stuff, it killed my meal. I’d have liked some mint sauce and even some veg. There didn’t seem to be any suitable vegetable options on the menu.
I also almost chocked to death on what looked like a long thin bone in the gravy. I notified a staff member, he said it was Ok and walked off. If you zoom in on the photo, you can see the bone in question, just floating in the gravy.
In summery, if you love steak and that’s the only thing that matters, this is your place, you won’t be disappointed. Also try the Mocha, it’s to die for!
I genuinely hope the owners take this as constructive criticism. I do believe that this place could be a little gem with...
Read moreThis is a quaint little restaurant that looks uninspiring from the outside. Once in, though, it's very nice. Quirky old fashioned decor and nicely spaced tables. The wagu steak my wife and daughter shared was perfectly cooked medium rare and enough for the 2 of them. The sauces were well made and chips crisp and hot. The steaks tasted amazing. We also had some ribs as starter. I had lamb chops med rare, and they were fabulous. The only downside is that my daughter wanted to purchase a bottle of champagne. However, it was not refrigerated and room temperature, so we sent it back. We then had to wait 20 minutes while they (under the wife's instructions) wrapped a damp tea towel around another and put it in a freezer. We know they probably don't sell many, but have one in the fridge just in case. There was just one girl waiting, which wasn't enough as it soon got busy and she was running around a lot. There isn't much atmosphere inside, but it's a small place. We loved the meal, but the cafe vibe is a bit out of place. Prices were reasonable for the quantity and quality of food. This is a quaint little restaurant that looks uninspiring from the outside. Once in, though, it's very nice.
