We’ve just been to stay at Applegarth Villa hotel for two nights, what an excellent stay we had, we have stayed at plenty of hotels over the years (and I still do due to work) and Applegarth Villas has to be the one of best we have stayed at, its on our doorstep, and not in London!
The minute you walk in you do think it cannot be this perfect throughout, but how mistaken you are as it is perfect and impeccable, with attention to detail. . . . . Everywhere.
You walk into a room that is spotless, clean, and absolutely amazing, plush carpets, quality bedding, towels and furnishings, immaculate bathrooms with not a spot of black anywhere on the white silicone around the bath, sink or grout in the tiles. Dust free light shades and fittings, no residual fingerprints on anything . . . 10 out of 10 for being perfect.
The nice touch is the little box of chocolates in the room and a great selection of tea, coffee, biscuits and the nice bottle of simple plain water, just sitting there waiting for you, its not hard to just make things like this right for your guests. The blackout curtains where excellent and actually did block plenty of light out, given it was July and long light nights, this was spot on. You will find all you need in the room, hairdryer, iron, safe, so there is no need to bring much apart from yourself and your clothes.
Then its down to the bar for a drink, what a place this is, well furnished and perfectly laid out, its just like a gentleman’s club must have been, you know you are somewhere nice when you sit down and await your drink and relax. Great selection of wines by the glass to choose from, spoilt for choice, the same for some lovely single malts too. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff while you ponder what to have as you will find it hard to decide what to have to drink.
Amazing views over Windermere when you sit in what is the restaurant area of a morning or evening and just take in the scenery that is the wonderful lake district. We had afternoon tea on the terrace and just relaxed there taking in the lovely gardens and scenic view of the mountains in the distance, you really could be anywhere as its so quiet and tranquil and not like you are so close to the town itself.
If you want a getaway place that is really how all hotels should be and aspire to be like, then come to Applegarth Villas, its adult only, great food, great location, great bar, friendly welcoming staff and no children running around shouting or crying and ruining the atmosphere.
All the staff here are so helpful, chatty and nothing is too much trouble for anyone, as everyone has time to chat with you, you cannot single out one person in particular as being outstanding as everyone really is so nice and genuine.
A 2 minute walk and you are in the centre of Windermere itself, it's a 20-minute walk downhill to the lake and Bowness from Applegarth, and uphill back, which is not bad on a nice day, Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston are all around 30 minutes' drive away. All of this makes the hotel a great place to base yourself and then explore the...
Read moreVery disappointed. Upon our arrival at the hotel we were met with a gentleman at reception and he asked if we had a booking I replied yes and gave him my name he said thank you. He then said you've paid a small deposit which was about £190 so far so could you please pay the remaining balance and sign the paperwork please. I was a little surprised by this but paid the balance Deluxe room booked at approx £200 night bed and breakfast should be 3 star at best. When you book a 5 star hotel you expect at the very least a quality bed and king size as a minimum. The bed base was an old divan base covered in a stripe base cover to hide the dated base. The mattress was simply appalling and should be replaced, quite simply the worst 3 x nights sleep we've experienced in a long time. The room was small and you couldn't even open the bathroom door fully 30% at most without it banging on the bed which was a double only to gain access into the bathroom. When you went into or out of the bathroom you tended to stub your toes on the base on the bed When we left the room for a day out we put the please service our room tag on the door. When we returned we found the room to be not vacuumed and no replacement soaps. I asked the lady if she had done our room and what type of service we should expect from a service she replied with... why? Have you got a problem? I responded with.... do you vacuum the floors? Her response was, depends how busy we are. If we've got time we will. I asked her if she wouldn't mind vacuuming our carpet which she did but not very willing. Breakfast is served in the dining area and you have to wait to be seated into the remaining tables all laid up with cutlery. I ordered the cornflakes but no spoons on the tables, we looked at other tables and there were no spoons The waiting staff weren't very visible so I continued to eat my breakfast with my tea spoon. I'd have thought simple cutlery on the table was the norm not having to ask. Second day at the hotel after our day out we went for a shower and again no shampoo replacement in our room My wife went downstairs and asked for replacement hair and body wash. The lady promptly came up to our room with replacements and apologised. These may seem like minor little things to some people but to a hotel that promotes itself as 5 star myself and my wife left disappointed. Surely if you put the tag on the door to service your room then the obvious thing for the servicing team at the hotel to do is to replenish soaps and a swift vacuum.
We wouldn't recommend this hotel for the deluxe rooms and we would definitely not return. I feel the deluxe room and service overpriced and...
Read moreBeautiful and intriguing building with elegant mix of modern and period furniture and fittings resulting a very pleasing and relaxing atmosphere. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful and the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious...the highlight of our stay! I should add that they were very accomodating of strict gluten free dietary requirements. The hotel is situated about a 20-25 mins relaxed stroll downhill to the Lakeshore. There is a private car park to the rear. Our room was in the lower ground floor and was similarly tastefully decorated. There was a small lounge area with a 2seater settee opposite an attractive faux fireplace with glowing 'coals' and overhead mirror, leading through to a small but smart bathroom with over- bath shower. The bedroom was off this area at a right angle and was ' neat' in dimensions but just about sufficient space for two. As a result a standard double bed was provided . There was a wall mounted TV and small dressing table and wall mirror ( but would benefit from an illuminated make up mirror as the room is not well lit and the bathroom mirror is a rather too harsh overhead light). The suite was perhaps a little dark throughout in fact, although this was atmospheric when the freestanding lamps were lit. In daylight the bathroom and bedroom have half height windows set higher up than usual and which were screened with blinds & net curtains as they look out onto the rear terrace seating area and steps. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel but would perhaps advise choosing an upstairs & more spacious room which we feel would reflect as slightly better value for the money charged than for the basement rooms. To be completely transparent our only negative comment was that room 18 &19 seem to be affected by a rather pervasive constant humming / thrumming sound which became more noticeable in the quiet of the night ( also heard in the hallway outside we noted ). This resulted in disturbed sleep somewhat. Our hosts hoped that ensuring an adjacent bathroom extractor fan was inactive overnight and switching off our bedroom radiator to reduce 'vibration in the pipes' would address this modest noise disturbance but ,whilst an intermittent flaring element of the sound was slightly less pronounced on the second night, unfortunately the underlying constant irritating humming persisted. Overall we would definitely return to this lovely hotel ( in a different room) and highly recommend the...
