PSA from me (an ex chef) to other potential customers: do not go there for the food.
Sunday roast was TERRIBLE! We went here after a friend's recommendation of the previous chef. The new chef is bad enough for me to write this review about. It was a quiet Sunday around 4pm and the place was empty except for a few people in the garden, so you'd expect great food service. But there was no cauliflower cheese with the roast, the veggie option was sold out, the girl behind the bar said we'd all get an extra portion of a different veg, but we got nothing. My friend asked if she could have something other than cabbage, but all our plates looked identical. All of us sat unimpressed at what arrived. Three tiny little potatoes, a table spoon of butternut squash (could've been swede cubes, was so bland I can't remember), a tablespoon of "over-boiled until grey" cabbage, all of it craftily hidden under two slices of meat. Barely half a plate of food for around £12 each. A person in a nursing home would get a larger, more varied portion. None of it was worth recommending.
Four of us all left completely unsatisfied. We left immediately after eating because it completely killed the great vibe of a sunny Sunday with friends.
After expecting such good food (of the previous chef), we got absolute rubbish. It's really put us off going back to the pub at all, which is a shame, because the bar staff are great and the selection of drinks is vast. The venue is well presented and very inviting. Definitely go there for a drink. Definitely don't go...
Read moreI usually enjoy this place, but ran into a really stupid policy. Went with my partner after a workout — she wasn’t very hungry and just wanted a small pizza, so we tried to order from the kids section of the menu. We were told it wasn’t allowed because we’re not kids. The staff were very kind (not their fault), but we ended up just having a drink and leaving somewhere else. They lost dinner for six people over a rule that makes zero sense. In 2025, with prices the way they are, not letting adults order smaller portions is very dumb.
EDIT REPLY: Hi, it was definitely your pub. You offer a £12 margherita pizza and a £7.50 cheese & tomato pizza — which we tried to order but couldn’t. Your staff was lovely and did the right thing following your instructions I'm sure, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.
We were not told that the margherita pizza and the cheese & tomato pizza were the same size, and honestly, it’s hard to believe you serve a full-sized adult pizza on a kids’ menu. Sometimes people simply want a smaller portion, and it feels unreasonable to be told that’s not allowed. We weren’t trying to take advantage of anything, just to have a lighter meal...
Read moreI’d heard good things about the roast so was looking forward to it, but it didn’t live up to my expectations. The veg was placed in a giant yorkshire pud, which although looked nice made the yorkshire too soggy. The roast potato’s weren’t very roasted. The pork belly was ok, but a bit fatty. I normally love crackling, but it was too hard to bite through. I liked the carrots. The portion was too big. I would much preferred quality over quantity + a smaller portion is easier to manage on the plate & avoids waste. My husband has spoken very highly of the roast at the Walrus, but he said it’s got worse each time he’s gone (this was his 4th roast). He said it’s completely changed each time. The staff were very nice. Only 1 roast was accidentally put through when we ordered instead of 2. We didn’t realise the mistake until only 1 roast came out. They gave the 2nd roast half price, which was appreciated. I think I’ll stick to just drinking there...
