Disappointing Experience After Over a Year of Loyalty I’ve never felt the need to write a negative review before, which makes this all the more upsetting. I’ve been a loyal customer at BrewDog for about a year and a half now, regularly attending the Thursday quiz nights with friends. Unfortunately, due to a very disappointing interaction with one of the general managers, Sam, I won’t be returning.
This week, we arrived as usual and asked about our reserved table. While we waited for it to become available, we sat down temporarily. I was chatting with friends about what food I might order, when one of our group, who’s only attended a few times and isn’t familiar with all the rules, came in with a Tesco meal deal. Before I even had a chance to explain to him that outside food isn’t allowed, the general manager approached us in an aggressive and highly unprofessional manner.
He claimed this was a "reoccurring issue" with our group bringing in food, which simply isn’t true. He then went on to say that if it happened again, we’d be banned because we "only come for the quiz and don’t contribute anything." I was shocked and felt deeply uncomfortable, especially when he looked directly at me the entire time, ignoring the person who had actually brought the food. As the only woman in the group, this felt unnecessarily confrontational and intimidating.
I tried to explain that I had bought something just last week, only for him to accuse me of "taking the piss", essentially calling me a liar. This entire exchange felt unnecessarily hostile and completely out of proportion.
I understand BrewDog is a business, and although the quiz is advertised as free, I recognise the expectation that guests purchase food or drinks, and we do. Despite us never even winning the £40 bar tab prize. Between my friends and I, we’ve consistently spent money on both food and beverages. We’ve also introduced many others to the bar, including events like my birthday and Halloween, where our group spent significantly at the bar. I’ve also bought a drink from the bar from Sam directly and tipped, which I’d like to assume he’s forgot.
Being university students, we’re mindful of our budgets. I’ve often ordered the Kids Hoppy Meal because it’s one of the more affordable items, though it frequently arrives missing the included apple juice, something I’ve never complained about. I’ve also had drinks that didn’t taste right (like a Coke Zero that tasted like dirty water, or as if it had beer in previously and the glass hadn’t been washed), yet still chose to return and support the business. The chips also taste like fried grease and have barely any potato.
Yes, I’ll admit there were a few times I brought in a soft drink, no more than five over the span of many visits, but I accepted being told off when that happened, and often threw it out to avoid any issues. We made a mistake over a year ago bringing leftover food in once, honest mistake, but since then we’ve respected the rules. We’ve participated in the wing challenge, ordered meals, and contributed as much as we reasonably could.
To be told we "don’t contribute" felt dismissive and deeply unfair, especially after 18 months of loyalty. I’ve never tried to take advantage of BrewDog, and I’ve always made an effort to support the business within my means. Also the pressure to tip is ridiculous, applying default tips on everything, and they even mock people who don’t tip on their instagram and make distasteful “memes” about it. Condescending, passive aggressive and unprofessional staff and this behaviour shows.
This experience has left me feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I truly enjoyed coming here, but after this interaction, I don’t feel...
Read moreHaving been here before for Wings Wednesday, we were hoping that it’d be good again. However this time was a huge drop off compared to last. Last time we were there it was busier and yet we still managed to be served almost twice as much. It started off with being handed a sheet to fill in with no other instructions. After filling the sheet in and waiting for around 15-20 minutes my girlfriend headed to the bar to ask if we were to order there. When doing so a member of staff laughed and proceeded to say ‘Yeahlaughs i’ll put it through now’’. Not exactly what comes to mind when you think of customer service is it. Not sure why you’d seemingly mock someone after them being given no prior instructions. As someone who manages in hospitality myself, the standard of service was terrible. I’m not shocked to see their hiring general manager for this location as the current staffing is in shambles. The actual food was great ( I’d keep the chefs and sack off the rest of staff personally) the wings were really good and I’d recommend the Buffalo wings specially. For the most part of the 2 hours of our bottomless wings we were waiting. I think we waited around for probably around 80 minutes of the total. When we were actually able to order wings they came pretty quickly. We were able to get two top ups, which considering the original portion and one of the top ups we had to ask to be served is not great. Most of the time we were waiting around staff were just standing around or sitting on their phones. We saw potentially 2 staff doing absolutely anything the entire time. The attitude of staff was rude and they were rather inattentive. If i had to describe them in one word it would be docile. Overall just a rather disappointing visit to somewhere we resllt enjoyed the last time. Will not be coming back anytime soon and definitely will not be recommending for...
Read moreI attended the beer school with Amy on Saturday 20th April 24. It was amazing and worth every penny (£25 per person). Amy's knowledge was amazing and she knew so much about brewdogs beers and stouts and also knew about the guest beers who brewdog support or do collaborations with. Amy explained everything about the drinks we were served, the brewing process, the ingredients added, why it tastes the way it does and some other fun facts. I think there were 6 rounds in total (sometimes one large drink and others were two smaller drinks in each round). It is very competitive for the price and you almost get your moneys worth through the drinks alone and a cheeseboard, which Amy recommends you try with certain drinks. On top of this Amy spoke to our group for over two hours in such am engaging way, time went very quickly and she made you feel relaxed. You can really tell she is proud to work for Brewdog and very passionate about what they do for our environment and their staff etc. Then each round we had to smell and taste each drink and compare taste with other guests and tell Amy what drink we thought it was (quite fun if you are a craft beer drinker). Amy would then tell you what drink it was and then give you an expert speech about said beer. There was a break in-between each round to go the toilet etc. If I don't attend again myself, which I most likely will during the brewdog beer festival Amy mentioned, I will 100 percent be buying this as a present for my family and friends it was brilliant! Thanks Amy and thanks Brewdog...
