I do not like to leave bad reviews but after reading the abundant positive reviews of Meridionale, we were expecting great food and a pleasant atmosphere at the restaurant. We came for dinner during a weekday. It was fairly empty and the entrance was lovely and welcoming. The staff were kind as well. However, when we got inside the restaurant past the entrance, we were very disappointed. The murky walls were full of damp and stains and it was not pleasant at all. They really need treatment and a fresh coat of paint. There was a bug on the window and a fly annoying us which was off-putting. The chairs were inconsistent and very uncomfortable, but worst of all was how sticky the tables we sat in were. It was not a good experience and it did not help our appetite. We got still water despite always getting tap water at restaurants. The bread basket for starter was OK, the bread was hard to eat. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip was not pleasant sadly. Everytime you’d dip your bread in you’d just get olive oil. And its quality wasn’t great. We also got pappardelle ragu and the melanzane pasta. The food came out very quickly. The melanzane pasta was tasty, albeit a bit too sweet for some reason. However the ragu was very very disappointing. The flavour of the sauce had no depth, and the tomatoes used didn’t feel high quality. Ragu is an essential thing that an Italian restaurant should get right. The beef tasted underseasoned and it was chunky too. Didn’t taste like the ragu was simmered down for hours. It tasted like a ready made tomato sauce from Tesco. We also were not given parmesan to add ourselves to the pasta, it was sparingly added by the staff. I was very disappointed. But the worst thing was this detergent-like taste in my food. I don’t know if it was the pasta (pasta water?) or the sauce or the pot it was cooked in, but something tasted like soap/detergent. For £15 per pasta we forced ourselves to eat it. Portions were OK. I was very disappointed, and our bill took longer to come than our food did. The waiters were very kind however, and cannot be faulted. Thankfully we had a discount...

The menu at Meridionale Restaurant features a variety of antipasti, pasta dishes, and main courses, including seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. They also offer a range of pizzas, which are cooked in a wood-fired oven. The restaurant sources many of its ingredients from Italy, including its pasta, olive oil, and tomatoes.
The interior of the restaurant is cozy and rustic, with warm lighting and traditional Italian decor. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available, and the outdoor seating area is a popular spot during the warmer months.

Read moreA little bit hit and miss. The pizzas are great. The grilled seafood is not fresh. The king prawns are rancid, smell like ammonia and are rotten. The heads are basically black from being spoiled (being black from being grilled does not look like that). There’s dirt in the prawns and the flesh clings on the shell and smells like ammonia. The flesh is also mushy, not firm and as you can see, it’s becoming stringy from decay already.
The tiramisu is ok. The grandma torte is excellent. So is the burrata, but the tomatoes were in the salad was wilted to the point when the skin was dry. The sausage is split open when grilled, so it’s a little dry. They said they would put friarielli in with my order, but they didn’t.
I ordered in, so I gave them an average for ambience to post...
