We went to Ben's Fish and Chips because research said we'd get delicious food for £10 a dish, but at the end of the meal, we were charged close to £70 for two orders of fish and chips and what we were led to believe were two orders of kids fish and chips.
Firstly, we were ushered to the back of the restaurant and given no menus or anything, just asked if we wanted fish and chips.
Believing this to be the £10 meal, we enthusiastically agreed! They were so friendly, after all.
We didn't order an appetizer, but we received one in the form of a man smoking right outside the front door, fifteen feet away from my kids. I mentioned to my wife that they should ask him to take his cigarette a little further from their paying customers, but my wife told me he actually worked there! To my shock, he came back into the restaurant and went behind the counter.
The food came with a heaping serving of stress, as my wife noticed the board of prices I couldn't see from my seat and mentioned that our servings weren't the 10£ we were expecting, but £17, and the kids meals were £14. We knew London was expensive, but the surprise but a damper on the meal when it came.
The fish seemed fine. I don't know if the smoke had an effect on my tastebuds, but it all seemed pretty bland. A healthy amount of salt and vinegar on the chips had them tasting closer to what I expected, and the tartar sauce was...well it was tartar sauce.
I'm a little baffled about the positive reviews, to be honest. There's gotta be loads of better options out there. Or at least cheaper options for a hole in the wall cooking the chips in the same oil they cook their fish in (speculation based on the taste; I didn't inspect the operations).
Oh, they did serve us a complementary dessert: fruit cocktail in orange juice. It was a hit with my...

If not, this place is for you. This restaurant is in the middle of London. This restaurant is in the center of this city. Furthermore the old fashioned vibe in this place makes you feel your meal while eating it. I felt the atmosphere very hard. The owner was incredibly welcoming to me, always smiling and treating everyone like an old friend. We became close friends with him. I have his number now. He's my favorite usta in London, Ali Usta, love from Turkey.
You can order what you want from the menu but I recommend you order the traditional fish and chips, As I ordered. The fish and chips were served with lemon and on the plate. The taste is unbeatable, with fresh fish and perfectly fried chips, offering a special touch that makes every bite delicious with that atmosfer. I haven't tasted other meals but I am 100 percent sure they're perfect. Ali Usta makes this meal the most delightful fish in the world.
The restaurant was very crowded, however they served my fish very fast. I ordered the meal I had in 5 minutes. Maybe Ali Usta catered me but he's trying his best in this restaurant. He's doing the best service and the meal.
It's worth your money, I was waiting to have an expensive check. But the check shocked me because it was very cheap. Ali Usta tried to pay for my receipt . He was so heartwarming to me.In this atmosfer this service and this meal, it's totally worth the money. If you visit this place don't forget to meet...
Read moreAfter visiting this "reastaurant", I feel only disappointment and anger. The staff didn't even offer us more fish (even though they have at least two types) they automatically oredered cod for us. We said ok, they probably know what's better (hahaha). I thought that this is "fast food" restaurant (at least it looks like a cheap fast food), after all, it only takes a moment to fry a fish. But we were waiting for at least 15 minutes for them to even start working on our order. The staff wasn't very nice either, the younger man looked so annoyed all the time, when we asked how long it will take, because we needed to be somewhere else in 30 minutes. Then two customers got their order before us, even though they arrived long after us. Some muslim women was obviously friend of the staff, so they served her as a priority, which is highly unprofessional. When they finally brought our food, we found out that it was definitely not worth the wait. The fish was tasteless, fries as well. They had some sauce on the table, but who knows how long it's been there. We were forced to take the food with us, because we didn't have enough time to eat it, thanks to their attitude, but we threw it away later anyway. It wasn't eatable. Overall it's highly overpriced and probably just tourist trap. I DON'T...
