Since watching Jiro Dreams of Ramen, I've been in search of the perfect ramen. Perfect ramen requires patient creation of the broth, with thoughtful attention to the bone source, spices, long cook time, and mixtures to achieve umami. We walked out of a theater show, and like usual - walked the streets allowing our sight and smell to lead us to the best food. I care less about luxury decor. We first waited at a tiny but crowded Chinese eatery. But a quick check two doors down - the friendly host went upstairs and came back telling me he had one table. Their dining downstairs and up, is narrow and tight. But the happy energy from their young staff made it a fun place to eat. We lucked out; it was 40 min from closing time.
THE FOOD: There was 3 in our party eating, so I was able to try the curry fried chicken, and 3 flavors of bao (chasu pork, crispy duck, fried chicken). My family likes to food-share. It was all above standard; my favorite surprisingly was the fried chicken bao. The light and crispy batter was perfectly seasoned, with a generous portion of white juicy meat. The ramen options were separated into 3 sections: chicken broth, no-bone, and the pork broth - advertised as "famous 20-hour pork broth". We ordered the regular tonkatsu and yuzu tonkatsu. The regular tonkatsu broth was superb, bursting with a rich umami flavor, complex but not overly seasoned. (We hate over-salted food) I am obsessed with yuzu - a Japanese lemon that has much higher flavor than other varieties. (I dislike gmo lemons from the U.S.) The yuzu tonkatsu has the right amount of yuzu flavor to add another sensation to the broth - the cooking took away any tartness. Instead, it had a floral note that made it a perfect broth for those that love yuzu. Wow. I have only had one other "perfect ramen", and it was in Atlanta. And it was not the Michelin-rated chef inspired restaurant. A trip to Japan - in search of perfect ramen is on my short list. I am happy to find Bone Daddies in London - not what I expected.
ATMOSPHERE and SERVICE. Despite the dining area being narrow and tight, it had that NYC fun energy. You are happy to be there. The waitstaff was young and friendly, and our waiter very helpful. I topped off the meal with a yuzu margarita, and it was delicious.
If you like chef prepared ramen, try this place. I was shocked when I looked online and learned this is a chain. They treated us with the best meal at the end our week-long...
Read moreAm a regular customer at the Old Street location, so when I heard that there is a new location at Leicester Square, I went to visit. I have visited twice since they opened and I am impressed by the service and food. I had the K-Dog Ramen (only available at Leicester Square) and it was definitely an interesting experience but a good one. I like the K-Dog on a stick and the cheese on the Ramen. The Fried Chicken snack was overall a bit too salty, but I hear that that is how it is, as the same batter is used at every location. Perhaps the management can revisit the taste of the Fried Chicken snack. Daniela who was servicing my section was kind enough to provide another slice of lemon, she says it helps to lessen the saltiness of the Fried Chicken. She was also very friendly and attentive during my visit. Thank you for that. On my second visit, I had the Yuku Tonkotsu, which was nice. But what blew me away was the Chashu Croquettes, it was amazing! I also learnt from one of their waiters, Marius, that filtered water by Belu is served at the Leicester Square and Victoria location. Per bottle is £2 and I think 50p goes back to Belu and they donate that to WaterAid. Ask the waiters when you are there for more information on this, and I am sure they are happy to share. The filtered water does taste different, in a good way, it was tasty in a very clean and pure sense. I was also looking forward to see the interior design of the toilets, as most of Bone Daddies restaurants have manga themed interior design in all their toilets. However, according to the GM, who was around on one of the days I was there, says the interior design of the toilets at the Leicester Square location is not ready yet. So keep a lookout in the next months when it is ready. Thanks again Bone Daddies for the food...
Read moreI am writing to express my disdain regarding your staff member at your soho branch. Myself and my wife went to the branch to sit down and order food, the restaurant was empty apart from 2 gentlemen that the waitress was already speaking to. (This was around 4.30pm today). Despite being a bit slow, it took a while for us to be seated but the waitress eventually came over and sat us, then proceeded to ignore us completely for about 10 minutes or so and just continuously flirted with the 2 gentlemen seated behind. She didn't ask us anything or even acknowledge us aside from seating us initially. She was flirting for so long that I could make out all about how she's been around parts of France (I assume she's French) and how Bordeaux is nice, speaking about wine etc, whilst speaking to the gentleman about where in England is nice and how she didn't like Liverpool etc. Suffice to say, we heard their whole conversation. After being so obviously ignored for so long, I and my wife got very frustrated and simply got up to leave. As we were leaving, she asked if it was because she took so long (obviously acknowledging the wait). She then sarcastically apologised and said 'sorry, we do talk to our guests here'. Which I understand but not for 10minutes whilst ignoring other customers in and otherwise dead restaurant. I honestly really wanted to try Bone daddies but for obvious reasons was unable to this time, especially as we live quite far from London. Please see to it that this type of behaviour/customer experience doesn't happen again for...
