My husband and I dropped by for a Friday night dinner, just the two of us, ending the week on a high note. What we expected to be a nice little meal turned into a fullblown flavour journey that we’ll be talking about for weeks.
The atmosphere was already promising. Cosy, lively, and filled with that comforting buzz of people enjoying good food and good company. But it was the service and care that really set the tone. Every interaction felt genuine and thoughtful, like we were being looked after rather than just served. The kind of warmth you rarely come by in the rush of city dining. The menu? A delightful problem. So many tempting options that we honestly considered eeny-meeny-miny-moe. Thankfully, the staff are absolute stars and helped us through it with patience, charm, and very good taste.
We started with the fried calamari and garlic prawns with bread, both recommended by our lovely waiter, AJ. We were initially skeptical about the calamari. Too many places hide frozen disappointment under a batter disguise. But AJ promised we wouldn’t be let down. And he was absolutely right. The calamari? Mind-blowingly tender, crisp, fresh, the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite just to savour it properly. I genuinely felt emotional when they were gone. The garlic prawns were rich, juicy, and so flavourful that even the bread they came with felt like a treat. AJ, who looked after us with such sincere attention, even brought out a Thai sweet chili dip for the calamari, a thoughtful touch that paired beautifully, though honestly, the calamari didn’t need it. They were perfection on their own.
Our mains arrived with surprising speed (we hadn’t even finished the starters), and each one was a knockout. The cod fish & chips was a masterclass in balance, light, crispy batter that let the freshness of the fish shine. Oh and not to mention, their own made tartar sauce was absolute divine. Give me 10 tubs please. And the grilled salmon? It deserves an award. Crispy skin, juicy flesh, perfectly cooked. You could taste the care in every bite. If there’s an award for best grilled fish, please hand it over to the chefs at this place immediately.
We ended the evening with a sticky toffee date pudding with vanilla ice cream. I hope their pastry chef sleeps well at night knowing they’re changing lives. Warm, rich pudding with molten date goodness, perfectly paired with the cold ice cream, it felt like the closing scene of a great film.
The food alone would’ve made it a night to remember. But what really stayed with us was the care, the warmth, the people behind it all. We were lucky enough to briefly meet the chefs, Mathew and Khriston, to express our thanks, and also to be looked after by AJ and Monica on the floor, with Benny at the takeaway counter sharing a kind smile. Every single person we interacted with made the evening feel personal. Like a little pocket of kindness in a big, busy world.
Do yourself a favour and visit. You’ll leave full, and maybe, like us, a little moved too. 10/10...
Read moreLovely restaurant. Felt more upmarket than it is, however, it is London and when you're near the British Museum, it's difficult not to try and follow suit. The decor is muted but refined. Dark wood on the floors, walls and tables keep the atmosphere hushed and elegant. It was clear from those around me that this is a place for the well travelled, well informed and well walleted to come for a quiet but traditional British meal. To my right was an Australian couple. Behind me were a group of Germans and to my top left a group of French. What I found wonderfully refreshing was that there was no music. Not even for background. None. And its exclusion added to sense of refinement because you're in a quiet part of London which is just off the main road from Euston, St. Pancras and Kings Cross stations so you're likely wanting to get away from all the noise. Anyway, it gave me space to breathe, think and relax. I ordered the jumbo Cod (I thought I was hungry after walking all day) and a side of mushy peas. Having lived in Edinburgh, I was used to higher prices for the same product but this blew me away. The extra paid wasn't on rent and rates but on the product. I got a whole cod plus a generous basket of chips and a small bucket of mushy peas. I should have asked how big the portions were first. My mistake. The food was lovely. The peas were thick but not so much that you had to chew for an age. The chips were freshly done due to the nuclear heat coming from them but we're lovely and fluffy on the inside with a bit of crunch outside. The cod was delicious but, unfortunately, I couldn't eat it all. I got four-fifths of the way when it got too much. It was a lesson in gauging my actual hunger and the portion I asked for. Overall, an excellent place to unwind and enjoy some delicious British seafood. The staff were friendly, accomplished and very professional. The food marvellous and, given its London, rather well priced. When I'm back down, I'll be making another trip albeit I think I'll have a smaller...
