Neil Rankin has successfully opened three Temper restaurants in the City, Soho and Covent Garden. Their standout feature is being a fantastic bbq restaurant in London with one of the world’s biggest restaurant fire pits. Think steaks and fish (fresh from their day boat in Cornwall) washed down with tequila and mezcal. The open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant is a great way to watch the chefs prepare your food over fire.

Temper also has its own dedicated butchery area on the mezzanine. The restaurant orders their meat whole and the chefs saw the meat on site. It sounds grim but this actually results in a zero waste policy as they use all cuts. Their animals are all rare breed from small selected UK farms with high welfare practices. As a result, they use on average 65 less cattle a week to serve the same amount of meat as comparable restaurants.

If you like tequila and mezcal, this is the place to be as there is so much variety available to choose from. We opted for a Moma’s Margarita: Temper’s smoky twist on a tommy ’s (£12) which was one of the best I have had! The On the Nose: gin, blackberry, fennel and black pepper syrup, mezcal, lemon (£10) was fruity and the Sweet and Spiced Spritz: balsazar rose, chilli gin, dolin chamberzyette, prosecco (£12) had a real kick to it which worked well with the meal!

Make sure you take advantage of happy hour from 3pm – 7.30pm where you can get some great bargain. A house G&T is only £4.50, prosecco is £4 a glass and a small glass of house wine only £3.50.

We opted for the sharing menu for £50pp. We started off with three sets of tacos: Beef fat, smoked goat and doritos fried fish. I cannot explain how good the smoked goat tacos were! They were simply bursting with flavour and the meat was tender and not fatty. The fried fish and beef fat were similarly flavoursome and the three together was a perfect way to start the meal.

You can choose your meat from the counter and watch it smoked in front of you. We had the opportunity to speak to the onsite butcher, Irish, to check out the cuts of meat and learn about the process. What stood out to me was the traceability of their products and how much they enjoy working closely with local suppliers around the UK.

As part of the set menu we had the Carne asada steak served on a paratha and a giant rib eye steak. Both meats were succulent and flavoursome and perfectly cooked medium (still red don’t you worry!). These fantastic meats were served with guacamole & nachos, fennel salad, lime & jalapeno, paratha and heritage tomato salsa.

Goodness me, we did not have much room for dessert after that feast. However, the Cookie, Breten, caramel was demolished in minutes. The soft warm cookie base with the ice cream was divine and just melted in your mouth.

Temper is such an amazing bbq restaurant in London. The atmosphere, quality of food and service is all absolutely top notch. We can’t wait to return to sample the rest of the menu. We were also attracted to the great value deal from Monday – Thursday until 6pm where you can get three individual tacos, a green salad and any side...

Four of us had a Friday lunch, aesthetic looks promising seated in the front, lots of light from large windows. The temperature was too cold and the high ceilings combined with speakers blaring out music (really annoying stuff like ace of base) made it very noisy. We couldn't hear each other properly nor the waitress when she was running us through the menu. Menu was hard to follow, they didn't list that you could buy a 'base thali' which was what she was recommending to us. We ordered starters and four base thalis and 5 Currys to accompany. The mains arrived ahead of starters, when we pointed this out they took mains away. They weren't quick in getting our staters though, Eventually after 1 hour we recieved the starters, then the mains came. The Thalis were pretty simple concoctions and randomly had a leaf of cos lettuce and a sprig of mint that had seen better days as a plate it really didn't work. Apart from possibly the fish head curry, it tasted like the curry sauces had been prepared separately from the meat and then combined as the meat hadn't taken in any flavour, all in all it was dire, still I did get a piece of lettuce!

The waiting staff then cleared half our plates then left us alone with the other half for 15 mins until I eventually called a waiter quite loudly and asked for the bill (yes they did take the plates when they brought the bill).

I had high hopes, but was left really diasapointed and even though the service wasn't great it was mainly...

2nd time I've been recently but this time they had really got their act together. The restaurant has always had great staff but the food could be a bit hit and miss, this time it was great. Between 4 of us we ordered the Porterhouse, T Bone and Ribeye steaks and they were cooked perfectly. We also ordered the Barnsley Chop, pork carnitas and the fried chicken! What were we thinking???- my excuse is that I was a bit pissed and only wanted a steak! Blame the girlfriend, she ordered (90% of the menu) Anyway all the food was great but it was too much, we ordered sides as well, I thought I was going to explode! We also had 4 bottles of wine and it came to £78 each, which for the amount and quality of the food was brilliant. Recommending this place to everyone and it is now my favourite Temper! Going back again soon but for a little less food! Oh it was my friend's birthday and they came out with their cookie and ice cream with a candle and sang happy birthday to him. Do not go to Temper and not have the cookie, it is their signature dish and delicious!
