We are a big group of friends living locally, and get together time to time in our Local pubs, The Hillgate was one of our favourites until a recent visit, which an extremely rude and abrupt waiter named Grant has ruined the mood of a group who were spending over £400 pounds on food and drinks. He refused to accept further orders on the tap, brought a bill to the table, while people was still eating and stand there with his card machine, and when I asked him to leave and let the everyone to finish their meal, he told me off " End of this discussion, no one gets a single drink until this bill is settled" When I tried to reason with them, he even became more rude, his logic was my booking was for 6 people and we have now got chairs from other tables ( empty pub) , to expand our group, and they need the chairs in case people walk in ( I mean there were lots of empty chair left, practically two more customers there other than us). When we asked to talk to a manager, no one was to be found, but another lovely guy name Paskval, tried to fix things and went out of his way to change our already ruined experience. I managed to convince friends to stay for one or more drinks but it has left a sour taste and unfortunately we won't be coming back. Sad that the incompetence of one member of staff can ruined otherwise a...
Read moreA group of 4 of us took a friend out for lunch at the Hillgate after attending a memorial service at a nearby church for her husband who had died. We were seated at a table. The surface of the table was sticky, so much so that the serviettes stuck to the table. The waiter came over and said he would bring us new serviettes and offered to move us, but we decided to stay put. My friend and I ordered roast beef with the usual roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and vegetables. The food arrived. My piece of beef had two strips of fat, 4 inches by 1 inch , with a rather small piece of meat. My partner's beef was pretty awful, the roast potatoes on both our plates were hard as rocks. Everything on the plate was dry. We told the waiter who brought us little cups of gravy for the beef and potatoes. The meal was almost inedible......tasteless with very little actual roast beef. We complained to the waiter who apologized and said he would speak with the manager. We waited and nothing happened. We declined to order dessert and decided to leave. The whole dining experience was pretty awful. We paid our bill of nearly...
Read morePub was great, nice atmosphere. Our original server was amazing - smiley and helpful. We ordered Sunday roasts (there were three of us) and the food came promptly. I noticed that our roasts didn't come with potatoes, despite them being on the menu. I enquired with the (second) server, he went to ask the kitchen and returned telling us that the chef informed him that roasts didn't come with potatoes. Knowing this to be false (you only have to look at the menu) I challenged him, he went back to the kitchen and only then did the kitchen admit that they ran out of potatoes. I don't mind that the kitchen ran out of an item, that happens, but I really disliked the outright lying that occurred. The chef knew when he sent our food out that there were no spuds and didn't say anything or offer a substitute. Then, when I enquired about the spuds, we were told a bald faced lie. Inexcusable. It's a shame too, because the food was quite nice and I liked the pub, but the experience was soured by the lies - there's just no need for it. Admit you don't have potatoes and offer an alternative, like chips, and...
