The five of us went to celebrate our friend's birthday. The place is a self proclaimed pub and museum. I wasn't sure about the "museum" until I got there. How wrong was I. It was a feast for the eyes! It was almost like Aladdin's cave of eclectic collections of things gathered from Phileas Fogg's travels!
Firstly we were greeted by front of house staff who asked us to put our details into a track and trace & trade app via a QR code. Then we were shown our table.
All staff were wearing full face visors and I saw them sanitizing every table and items on the table down after guests have left, very thoroughly.
We were served by Paula, who was very friendly, quick, attentive and knowledgeable of the menu and drinks. The food is Italian and the impression was "Nona style home cooking"...we were in for a treat! A QR code was also available on our table as an alternative to table service.
They had a wide selection of ales and beers to suit all taste buds.
Our starters were squid rings and chunky chips. The squid rings were exquisite, cooked to perfection. Soft and juicy and tasted fresh with a light crispy batter, served with tartar sauce, lemon wedge and garnish. The chips were crispy on the outside and steaming hot fluffy clouds in the middle. 5 out of 5 so far and I reckon my best friend, who's a self-proclaimed chip connoisseur, she would have had agreed.
The mains menu was wide but not too vast. Everything sounded looked amazing. We had the pork shank, whole sea bass, Italian style roast beef, Parma ham pizza and Diaviolo pizza. The kitchen was busy so the wait was a little slow but we were happy with our drinks and starters. Paula kept a check on us and updated us on the expected arrival of our mains.
The pork shank came with all the trimmings..it was hearty Northern Italian Nonna cooking at it's best. The dish was massive and generous! The sea-bass was succulent and of a decent size. The Italian beed was also generously portioned with all the trimmings and both pizzas looked amazing, crispy thin sourdough rectangles served on wooden slabs.
The price was very reasonable. The ambiance, the service and the food made the few remaining days before the early closing because of Covid have had made last night very memorable.
Highly recommended a visit, or two, or three....heck, just become a regular!...
Read moreThis is one of my favourite pubs and restaurants in London, the food is really tasty, the environment and the decoration are unique. It hurts me to write this review but I think, to point to bad things is the way for people to improve. Yesterday was my 40th birthday and I couldn't think a better place to go with my girlfriend and another couple friends to celebrate it. We arrived earlier to the place to enjoy a few drinks before dinner, the environment was great, live music, nice service, nice people around as always you can find in this place. We ordered food, the food was great as a proper Italian food that you can get in the heart of Naples, great conversation with my friends and partners, everything was spectacular. The problem was around 22:00 when we finished our courses, and one of the waitress came straight to our table without reason with the bill, we had ordered another bottle of wine a few seconds before and we wanted desserts. The pub was closing at 23 or 24 yesterday so not reason for rushing us. We didn't understand why was the reason of that. Anyway at the end, the waitress pull back the bill and told us that we can order only tiramisu, cannolis and panna ccota. We ordered a cannoly and a tiramisu to share, as I said, I have been in this restaurant many times before, and yesterday they brought us a pink tiramisu and two cannolys harder than a rock. I know the standards of their cousine and these desserts were worse than any dessert that you can find in a off license at two in the morning, very disappointing!!. I would rather if they told us that the kitchen is closed and not bring any dessert that what they brought, and charged us even we left them on the table and we told to the waitress that we don't like them. It's a shame, I wasn't asking for candles but I didn't understand the situation at the end of our dinner. I hope this review will help them to improve and correct these mistakes. Otherwise always will be one of my favourite...
Read moreBoth ale pumps out of action when visiting today so didn’t hang around. One is a sin, two is a crime. I’ll come back when you’ve got your house in order and hopefully give you a more positive review.
In response to Paola, it’s surprising that a customer-facing business should make a personal attack in response to a professional criticism, especially when incorrect. I entered your ‘home’, or as I like to call it a ‘public house’, and someone greeted me and I responded accordingly so there was no problem there. Maybe I didn’t hear somebody else but I have a partial hearing impairment. I wanted an ale, you didn’t have any so I left and went somewhere that offered me what I wanted just as you would no doubt do if a business didn’t offer you what you wanted.
A good excuse would have been some sort of fault but I suppose you’re at least honest in admitting that you’re not able to manage your cellar effectively. You’ll note that I did leave the door open for a more positive review in the future.
follow-up review: I came in today with the hope of giving a more positive review but unfortunately all ales were off on a Saturday so I decided to take my custom elsewhere. No doubt the management will seek to blame me for my taste in beer or perhaps witchcraft, I really don’t know but let’s see how they turn me into a horrible person using bad English in...
