🚇 Colliers Wood 🍺 £5.60 Staropramen
The Sultan is located on a quiet residential street near Wandle Park in South Wimbledon. The nearest Tube is Colliers Wood.
This pub was originally built in the 1930s. During World War II, a bomb badly damaged it and was rebuilt to the original specifications in the 1950s. The pub is operated by @_hopbackbrewery, who have been at the helm since 1994.
This is a traditionally decorated two-bar pub with a Public Bar and a Saloon Bar — a rare find these days. The Public Bar is on the left and still has its original servery and back bar. There’s also a dartboard, some classic seating and a superb carpet. The Saloon Bar is on the right and is a bit bigger. It’s got lovely wall panels, plenty of seating, and the servery is tucked into the left corner. Around the walls are a multitude of awards this pub has won over the years. The carpet in this bar is also a corker. Next to the Saloon is a conservatory that runs a little book exchange. Just outside, there’s a patio beer garden, plus lots of benches out the front too.
The beer selection is excellent and should please both purists and more casual drinkers alike. As most of you know, I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to beer, so I went for a Staropramen. My pint was great — and the price was too, coming in at under six quid. Food-wise, they’ve got toasties, a range of pork pies, and scotch eggs.
We arrived just before 2pm on a sweltering hot Saturday afternoon in June. There were a couple of lads playing darts in the Public Bar and a group of old boys having the craic in the Saloon. The atmos was relaxed and laid-back, so it was easy to settle in. We were soon joined by a lovely local who noticed we were in the area and came over for a chat. Service was spot on — the guy who served us was friendly, told us a bit about the pub’s history, and even posed for a photo.
I loved it here, what a wonderful pub. The unique suburban pub architecture, the original two bar set up, fantastic beers, community spirit and first class hospitality. Get this one on the “To Visit” list.

Read moreThis is my local pub; I love it, but there is one issue - the landlord. Every time we see him (usually, he is sitting outside staring at his phone), he never acknowledges us and can't even be bothered to say hello. He knows who we are as we are in there every week. If you are the landlord and reading this review, I suggest you start acting like a pub landlord and smile or say hello to the punters who keep your pub in business. We were there pre-COVID, post lockdown and will probably still be drinking there long after you have gone, so please make a bit more of an effort with your local community. After all, you are in the customer...
