We were in London and keenly headed into Viet Eat, chasing the Banh Mi - having heard it was good. The place is a cosy Vietnamese street food style place, that prides itself on delivering authentic flavours and good service.
The menu boasts a variety of Vietnamese classics, from Pho to Bun Hue, and of course, the Banh Mi.
There were 4 of us, and it turned out I snagged the last Banh Mi before they ran out. I ordered what is called the “Signature” - it sounded like the right one to try on my first visit. It was a delicious crusty baguette with Vietnamese sausages, spiced pork, pâté, mayo, and soy sauce. I liked the flavours and let everyone have a bite. I’d come again and try some of the other Banh Mi’s for sure.
We got a plate of salt and pepper tofu to share, which was the right amount of crispy on the outside and tender inside, seasoned well and there was a bit of chilli on the plate that complimented it well.
Others in the group who couldn’t get a Banh Mi pivoted and ordered a braised pork belly rice plate, a crispy pork belly rice plate, and a lemongrass chicken noodle salad bowl. Each person enjoyed their dishes - I had a little go of each and the braised pork belly was a definite winner.
For drinks, we opted for the homemade lemonade, a refreshing palate cleanser. My daughter and I love trying deep-fried ice cream when it’s on the menu. Our old favourite place back in Australia did an amazing one, and we compare them all to that one. This one was good, so if you like it and have room, grab one.
One of our group requested their dish without coriander, mentioning they have the genetic variation that makes it taste like soap to them. It is apparently called the OR6A2 gene variation. I love coriander, but find things like this about humans very interesting. The staff were great and accommodated his request and other dietary requirements without issue.
Viet Eat delivers on its promise of authentic Vietnamese street food in the heart of London.
The food is good, comes out pretty quickly, the service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is nice. A good spot for a yummy lunch as the hustle and bustle of the global city...
Read moreI believe the picture tells it all. Like I ordered steak pho but where the heck is the soup??? I open the box and THIS IS IT! Where are the peppers, bean sprouts, lemon, other seasonings veg that comes with any standard pho dish in the U.K. Not to mention the HORRIBLE and HORRIFYING service. I ordered well done pho noodles and wanted to eat in. When the dish first arrived, the soup was with medium rare beef with many “bloody” parts. I told the guy that I ordered well done and he took the dish away. The second time, there are still red on the edges. I asked him again and even said “you don’t have to replace the dish but just cook for a little bit longer so the meat is well done.” But the taller server got really upset and aggressive, he took the dish back to the kitchen and I can hear the loud sound of the dish being dumped on the table when he took it back. I feel terrified in the middle of this and the fact that he also said in a threatening tone that everything is fully cooked in this shop gave me lots of discomfort about staying in. So when he fixed the dish and came back, I decided to take it away instead of having in and he packed the dish in a takeaway box for me ... but below is what I received in the takeout box (I haven’t touched it at all.) i reckon he did it because he thought I would not check my own takeaways at the shop. This is an intentional insult for sure and I’ve even paid the service charge when I got the bill - just to find out it’s an intentionally insult afterwards??? Very upset about this experience and will never come back! The shop owner owe a refund...
Read moreI don't like to write bad reviews, but I've been here a few times and haven't been greatly impressed. It has the prices of a restaurant, but with its communal seating it feels more like a cafe chain. Seating aside, my real gripe would be the quality of the food. It's not terrible by any means, but it's not brilliant either and really is about the same quality I'd expect from a chain like Wasabi rather than a restaurant. The Pho (soup) was very bland to my tastes - flavourless chicken in a very weak broth.
The baguettes are probably the saving grace. They can be very tasty and are somewhat more reasonably priced. The only thing that lets them down is the quality of the bread isn't great - the baguettes are all a kind of low grade, crumbly overdone effort, when a soft good quality baguette would really make it great. This could be easily fixed and I'd probably come here for the baguettes alone if they changed this as the fillings they have are all pretty good.
Service is also a bit iffy. On several occasions I've been left hanging around for 15 minutes waiting for something. Overall it's not the worst place on the world, but I feel like they need to tighten up in several areas to really merit a good rating. Better quality bread for the baguettes, a proper broth for the Pho and slightly better organisation in terms of service would make a drastic improvement. As it stands it's really the quality of food you'd expect from a chain, the seating environment of a chain, but the prices of a restaurant and slightly chaotic...
