I've always loved the Poacher, it's the kind of pub where you can go have a drink with friends and hear yourselves speak. And it's somewhere I've felt comfortable popping in for a pint on my own after work, if I've missed the bus or something. Had a great night here the other weekend for my 55th birthday. I was able to reserve the snug and it was big enough for a party of 16 of us and my friend was able to bring their dog. The bar staff were lovely and really helpful. They agreed to bring a surprise cake out to me that my friend had made and delivered the evening before. And one of the staff even ran after us down the road to give us a bag that my mate had forgotten!
Great selection of real ales and spirits. As we were a large party and had chosen not to order food in advance, we just opted for snacks, rather than the main food menu, but they were able to rustle up loads of chips, samosas, olives, pitta and hummus etc. at short notice, and it was lovely. Couldn't have wished for a nicer birthday and was really happy that I'd chosen the Poacher to share it with my friends. Thanks to the staff for...
Read moreWhat happened to pubs with a choice of ales? They're called the Lincolnshire Poacher in Nottingham. 9 ales on offer. As a Castle Rock pub it features one or two of their own brews. But as one is the CAMRA beer of the year winner from way back, Pale Harvest, that's hardly pushing the brand. Beer perfectly kept I had a pint of the said Pale Harvest and also a pint of Wye Valley HPA. Not quite as good but went down well. Can only recall St Austell Proper Job which was popular but my photo gives you a fuller list. The clientele were a somewhat addled mix of unpretentious locals. Has a slightly work around the edges feel and look. Complimented by the multo instrumented Country and Western band playing. Wednesdays and Sundays are.l7ve music nights. I was too late to try the grub but a good mix on offer. It's not your bog standard chain or retro pub or faux on trend pub. For me that's a big plus. A dying breed of pub that needs our...
Read moreOne of the best pubs in Nottingham for real ale, if not the best. Owned by Castle Rock brewery, it has a couple of their beers and then a whole load of guests making up a regular 12 or 13. Engages enthusiastically in mild and stout month promotions. Also boasts about 50 whiskies making it a must for whisky fans locally. Doesn't do so well with hot drinks (tea is just 'tea'). Food is above average for pubs with decent vegetarian range. Crisps are Seabrook. The Poacher has several different zones with different ambiances: the main bar can be live and noisy; the snug behind it quiet and secluded; the conservatory at the back relaxed and expansive; and outside is the open-air seating area for smokers and those who like the elements. The main bar sometimes hosts live music. The pub also has an upstairs room (sadly not wheelchair-accessible) which can be rented by groups for £10, free for...
