The ultimate burger champion in Oxford - GBK never disappoints.
From their sides, try the truffle cheese fried, the onion rings, or truffle cheese tater tots - the menu has been largely expanded in the past month so be sure to keep your eyes out for new starters options.
I usually go for their beef burgers (not a fan of chicken burgers personally, but that’s not to say theirs are bad) and would especially recommend: The Blue Cheese, The RocketMan and the Mighty. The Mighty features two burger patties so it’s a good choice if you’re feeling extra hungry and in need of protein, but in normal conditions I always find it to be a bit too much. Recently I’ve also tried their Loaded burger - it was delicious, though I found the addition of extra beef with BBQ sauce a bit unusual.
If you are eating in it really pays off to get their Fizz drink which is refillable while you’re there and a very refreshing addition to the meal. Best one is the Strawberry Elderflower, though the classic Lemonade is not bad too (do not make the mistake of going for the Vanilla Passion Fruit, it tastes very artificial).
Between eating in and take away I would always go for eating in - when getting the food for takeout somehow the bottom burger bun always becomes overly soggy from all the juices and while some people like this I frankly find it disgusting.
Be sure to make use of their student discount or the limited offer Twice as Nice deal (2 burgers and 2 fries for £20)!
The staff is delightful over the phone and in person, special shoutout to Deborah from the George Street store who always takes extra care with the orders ❤️
Overall a great place for the classic burger and fries meal, definitely among the top in Oxford, and you can get a big meal for a good price if you do the...
Read moreI hate giving bad reviews but I have to be honest on this one! Sorry GBK!
We went in today with the assumption that being GBK it has to be decent going by previous experiences at other locations. Sadly it wasn't the case and I hope it isn't a trend among the rest of the GBK branches.
We refused to use the tablet self ordering and went with the good old fashioned way of ordering our food through a human being. The tablet idea might be okay if it is busy but even then it detaches the human element. I get that we are becoming more socially inept as a species but let's not actively encourage it.
Food arrived in good time. Burger was fine as were the loaded fries though bit on the small side.
Went to pay and noticed the 12.5% service charge added on to the bill. Fortunately the waiter was honest and asked if I would be happy to pay it, he had no issue at all when I asked for it to be removed from the bill. Again, human element is helpful as I've read that ordering on the tablet adds it regardless so we dodged a bullet on that one.
Nearly £40 for two burgers, one loaded fries and two drinks is not good value for money sadly for what you get. GBK don't seem to be as good as they used to be and sadly I will take my custom elsewhere from now...
Read moreWhen I lived in Oxford several years ago GBK used to be a very pleasant upscale establishment to go to for a fine burger, excellent fries and a bottle of beer or a bottle of wine. Unfortunately time has not be kind and its obvious that management isn't what it was. While the table service was polite, the till staff were surley, bordering on rude, the lampshades were cracked and dirty (the decor is unchanged in over 5 years) and the toilets were filthy with overflowing bins being the least of the problems. Although there were only a handful of patrons, staff milled around chatting rather than proactively keeping the restaurant clean. Items on the menu were unavailable and the burger was greasy. Waiting staff were however pleasant and attentive. This GBK is not representative of others - I thoroughly recommend the GBK in Milton Keynes which is always lively, clean, has great food and drink and deserves its name. Until Oxford GBK gets the above problems resolved it should simply call itself a Burger Kitchen as there's nothing in there that makes it a Gourmet...
