The food here is incredible, cannot fault the food. But the service was extremely poor. No one greeted us at all when we 1st arrived. I made eye contact with the lady across the bar and she turned away when I went to approach her and ask where to for afternoon tea that we booked. Once we found where we needed to go, there wasn’t anyone at the desk waiting to seat our pre arranged booking. The manager came out and said someone will be with us shortly, no one arrived. It wasn’t Until the lovely new girl (can’t remember her name) noticed we hadn’t been greeted sorted us out. And then it just got worse from there . The waiter came over and asked if we would like tea/coffee and water. But didn’t ask if our other 2 guest who weren’t having afternoon tea wanted drinks. Coffee and tea arrived with no sugar, milk or water. We had to call the waiter back who walked off to order a pint. I had to go over and ask for a jug of tap water again. Still no water arrived. We then asked if we could order food to come out at the same time as the afternoon tea so we could all eat together. The waiter said no problem I’ll put a hold on the order. Shortly after the afternoon tea arrived, still no water and no starters for the other 2 in our party. 20 mins go by and their food then arrived with our water which I had to go up a 3rd time to ask. At which point we had all eaten our food and sent the starters back. A large bottle of water then arrived at the end of the meal. We finally get to the bill, not only have the charged us for a bottle of water when I asked for tap water, they had also charged us for the starters that arrived late! I spoke to the manager and explained all this who then removed the items from the bill. Didn’t really apologise, and the apology I got didn’t really feel like he was bothered. Such a shame really because the waterfront is a lovely place to go for food and drinks and much better service. Once again the food was incredible! And cannot fault it. Just the poor service through out. I would like to reconsider the lovely new girl who was there who was the only saving...
Read moreGreat location, we have always drove or walked past and looked up in envy at the dinners looking out at the amazing view. We were really happy to be given a window seat, but then the place was empty. We had soup of the day, (Potato and Onion) you can see the kitchen staff preparing your food, the soup was given a large shot of olive oil from a plastic squeeze bottle. It looked nice, but far too salty. We struggled through it. Main course I had fish of the day, Mackerel. The dish was dressed in a cheese sauce, but then before sending it out a huge helping from the Olive oil bottle. When I lifted the fish the veg underneath was swimming in oil. Again too much salt, but far too much oil, if you tip the plate you could spoon it out. We were the only diners from 5.15pm -6.30pm. I can see why, the food is really bad, a 'wanna-be' chef covering everything in oil. My wife had fish and chips, the fish was tasteless, the chips were the frozen type and looked and tasted like 'Oven Chips'. You can normally tell if a place is good by how busy it is. When you look up and assume the place is full, it's not it's just a few diners sat in the window seats.
The staff seemed bored mulling around with nothing to do, at one point 5 staff in the plating area, meanwhile the phone is ringing and no one is answering it. It got quite annoying, the poor owners are paying to advertise and paying staff and they clearly are on a 'Free Ride'. That said, two waiters were very friendly and helpful.
Fantastic location, amazing views, very low grade chef, poor, lazy or no management. Take this restruant from its location and it would have closed years ago. I suspect it is surviving due to its location and tourists, I doubt it gets much repeat business. Sorry to be harsh but the food...
Read moreThe Ocean View at The Dome in Plymouth is a a mediocre restaurant with a few redeeming qualities. Upon entrance, you are greeted by a decent, circular bar. The bathrooms (the best part of the restaurant) play on a gold and navy scheme, with weak lights, putting a dark veil on your eyes. No windows (obviously) but thankfully, there is an air freshener bottle on the sink.
Reception is polite and interior design match the maroon, gold and navy colours in the toilets. This place plays on its ‘ocean view’, which either is a) blocked by perpetual ‘ongoing works’ or b) you aren’t sat near the windows.
On to food. Starters were nothing to write home about. I will take full blame for ordering chicken tenders in ‘Ocean city’, which were your standard out of the packet frozen chicken nuggets. I had a generous portion of mayonnaise with my starter and some sad looking greens. My main was the fish of the day plaice on a bed of green beans, new Cornish potatoes, tomatoes with a hollandaise sauce. This meal was at most okay. The fish is the only noteworthy aspect of the meal. The sides were essentially tasteless. At this point, my patience ran low so for pudding, I just wanted three simple scoops of good quality vanilla ice cream. If my patience ran low before the pudding, now it was in the negatives: three scoops in a melting soup of vanilla. Thank you.
With my partner £100 down, service was the cherry on top. I usually empathise with waiters and I am inclined to do so here too, so just a few pointers for improvement: scribble down orders, don’t forget customers’ requests (e.g. tap water) and say your farewells with just slightly more enthusiasm.
