I used to love this pub. The beer selection I believe was and still is the best in town. Pints average £4.5 -£5.5 which is not bad for the quality. The pizzas are quite good actually but tbh that's not what would drag you to it. The pub had a (sort of) recent refurbishment, the bar looks nice and the bathrooms clean, still the most amazing bit of the pub is it's outside area, it is surprisingly large with tents (there's even a new covered area in the front island next to the car park). The charm of these areas is achieved by a clever warm lightning and wood benches that help you enjoy a good time with friends. Having said all of that one would argue why I wrote my first sentence and why this rating. Basically this is a local, very nice I admit, but still local pub, frequented by usually the same clientele, this does not represent a bad thing in itself until you start feeling the different treatment you get. In other words if you are not one of the usual guys, joking with the owner or knowing the waiters/bartenders you can expect that you will not be getting the same treatment. Don't misunderstand me, when I go to a pub I expect to do my queue patiently waiting, kindly buy a beer, drink, repeat, I do not expect any "preferential treatment". Still I do not expect that any person for whatever reason would jump the queue, and this happens more often than not, the locals do seem to have this kind of extra attention that would leave you with no beer and waiting up to 15 mins. Unfortunately I have been to this pub too many times to really notice this behavior. Luckily there are other quite good pubs around so each person can chose not to be mistreated. I wish them all the...
Read moreIf I could give no stars I would! My 18 year old daughter visited earlier this evening with some friends. When she bought their drinks to the table the landlord came over and aggressively and very publicly accused her of adding her own alcohol from her bag! She was shocked and said she hadn’t and that he could check her bag (an open school bag full of folders and books) but he refused and continued to berate her very loudly. At no time was she given the opportunity to prove that she wasn’t doing this and had purchased ‘proper drinks’ from the bar, which he could have checked by simply asking his staff. His behaviour was rude, unpleasant and intimidating! I should add that my daughter has no issue at all with being asked and fully appreciates that it could have been an issue that he had with people in the past, but it was the manner in which it was done!...
Read moreHands down, the best pub in Reading. Excellent range of beers and ciders on offer, just a 10 minute walk from the town centre. Always has very friendly staff, willing to offer samples and tally through their offerings. Incredible pub garden, which gets the sun for a lot of the afternoon.
Can't fault it. Will be back many times I'm sure!
Edit: Google asked me to update my review. All of the above still relevant. ALTHOUGH... Some very pricey pints if you want an IPA. Pump and cider crowd will be very satisfied. Ding Lager at £5 a pint...
