We came across this place as it was close to our Ibis Hotel and we were looking for somewhere reasonably priced for breakfast. For Canadians, the prices in restaurants in Scotland were much higher than what we pay at home. Or maybe it's just that our dollar is weak. But our first breakfast in town near Queen Street station had come to about 33 pounds or about 60 Canadian dollars for two simple egg dishes and two lattes. This is about twice what we would pay at home. We quickly realized we needed to stretch our dining budget while visiting. We were delighted to find this spot, with some very reasonably priced breakfast offerings. We ended up eating here several days in a row. Instead of only having a choice of a full Scottish heavy breakfast, you can order smaller things, like porridge with fruit, or yogurt and fruit, or an egg breakfast sandwich with coffee. We weren't sure what calibre of food to expect from a pub, but the food was surprisingly nicely cooked and prepared. Even the coffee, which you get yourself from a machine near the bar, was much better than any coffee I've had from a machine at home. These machines offer a range of drinks, including regular coffee, lattes and mochas. And refills are free. While this place looked very popular at night and was very full when we went by, thanks to also having very reasonable dinner and drink options, at breakfast it was pleasantly quiet and not busy, with attractive booths near the windows where you can watch the people go by. For any Canadians who are new to the ordering protocol here, you order and pay for what you want at the bar first, give the bartender your table number, then a server brings it when it's ready. Thanks for making our breakfasts in the city...
Read moreThe Hengler's Circus is my local pub and there is a reason why I keep going back!
First off the guest ales from around the world are changed frequently- meaning that every time I visit I can try out something new. Staff are more than happy to give a few samples, and the time required to decide which you'd like a pint of first. There is also the opportunity to elect guest ales to be brought in for your enjoyment.
There is usually a warm and friendly ambience, which is impressive considering that it is slap-bang in the middle of Glasgow's 'party street'. I have always been able to spark up an engaging conversation with a friendly stranger, or been left alone when needing time to contemplate life in peace.
I cannot speak of the food as I dont go to Wetherspoon pubs for their food, although on a Sunday you can always find happy families and pensioners digging into a hot meal.
I appreciate the decor, which is in-keeping with the aesthetic of the art deco Beresford building opposite. You can find interesting old photographs and information on the surrounding area, including Hengler's Circus which used to be situated in what is now the burnt-out O2 venue next to the Art School. There is outdoor seating where you might catch a glimpse of the rare Glasgow sunshine, and there are blooming flower beds which probably benefit from all the rain here.
Staff are prompt and polite both at the bar and through the app- even when they have to kick you inside after 10pm, following Scotland's alcohol laws. The security on the door are courteous too!
Great pub :) I'll be back...
Read moreCame in on Sunday morning. Ordered a vegetarian breakfast with no sausage but an extra slice of toast in replace of this, however was charged £1.18, bit annoying but accepted. Ordered at 11.20, we were told the food would be 20 minutes as they were busy, finally recieved the food shortly after 12pm, only to have it rudly put down, after noticing there was no eggs on the breakfast, I said to the food waiter, who very brutally said the vegetarian breakfast doesn't come with eggs... why would a vegetarian breakfast not come with eggs? It does, the menu states it does. I almost felt embarrassed for mentioning it due to his reaction, this was not resolved. Not only was this incredibly annoying but the food was cold. The food waiter doesn't have a clue. Even before this mishap the waiters all wander around looking for tables in the wrong area, twice we were approached with a cup then a bap wrongly by two separate staff members. I was jubious on posting a review, nobody likes a karen but noody seemed to be running the shift, the staff need better training on customer service and...
