The interior looks nice and clean and there is a huge choice on the menu. There was a sign on the toilet saying out of order but I didn't ask if there were any other facilities available. I ordered the fish special and gravy and my partner had the mince beef and onion pie with chips peas and gravy. The lady taking the order misheard and ordered the cheese and onion pie but luckily I noticed and she let the kitchen know. When the food arrived they had forgotten the peas so I had to get up and ask for them. The food itself was mostly nice. The peas were a bit sweet for our taste but not the worst we've had. The gravy was delicious, the chips were good, they weren't greasy. The fish was large and the batter was very nice and crispy, not stodgy, but the fish was slightly on the dry side. There was plenty of filling in the pie but my partner thought the pastry was a bit overcooked. The lady that took the order and the young lad were very pleasant and apologised for her errors. The other woman behind the counter was a bit offhand when my partner took our finished tray up to the counter (we weren't sure if we had to clear up after ourselves). She just said 'put it there', no thanks.

After work, I attended Mother Hubbard's with enthusiasm and my initial reaction was very positive. Nice place, wonderfully set up with parking and good staff. The fish & chips were generally good. Fish was relatively good in a wonderfully crispy batter, perhaps the batter too salty. The chips were dry and good. I had wanted score at least 4 stars but in view of so many chips appearing to have "rotting spot"; I could not score it more than 2 for my overall experience. I will endeavour to buy again, to see if my overall experience could be better. I hope to score it with an enthusiastic higher score. My standards is high as I have tasted good quality fish & chips over the years; I did have high expectations as I had heard good reviews from friends. I hope my next experience is good enough for me to score 5/5. The photographed chips were some of the chips I had to throw away.

Wouldn’t rush back, in fact I wouldn’t go back at all. Homemade cheese and onion pie, was a soggy mess which looked and tasted like it’d been in the fryer, more than likely it had microwaved, hence to say, you’d be better with a spoon, terrible, didn’t bother eating it. Chips nothing spectacular, couple of green ones that were not particularly attractive! Waited for ten minutes even though there was only two people in front of me, and it’s a bit awkward as you’re stood around people sat in eating, needs segregating. Customer service not great, staff seem disorganised with one barking orders at the others in between taking pictures on the phone. All in all, I’d stick to the small family run “chippie”.

Service was perfect. The young guy on the till took the time to talk us through the menu and was very patient while we was choosing what to get, they were busy but he didn't rush us at all. Amazing customer service. he deserves to work somewhere better than here where he can truly flourish.

Everyone else, you can feel the atmosphere between them... Very awkward.

I always order a sausage, meat pie, chips, gravy. My partner always gets fish, chips, mushy peas, gravy.

The menu itself: very confusing visually. Too many options... Gordon Ramsay would not be happy with this menu! 😂 No option on the kids menu for sausage and chips (from what I could tell?) I usually order off the kids menu. They don't sell meat pies... Why do chippys in Stockport not sell meat pies!?!

Prices: first looks I thought it was very fairly priced. there's definitely more expensive chippys in the area and I honestly can't complain.

We waited around 20 minutes but it was busy.

Portions: when I saw the gravy I thought it was tiny. But then I saw my portion of chips and the tray was half empty. It was enough for the chips I had, but if you had chips and a fish you'd need 2 gravys for sure. I'm on Ozempic and Im still hungry after it! 😂

They don't have different sizes for chip portions (again from what I could tell from the confusing menu!)

Also don't think they have different gravy sizes.

Chips: Very dry and not cooked enough, not fresh even at 7pm at peak time. i get the feeling they are frozen, or purchased or pre cut. However if you don't like oily chips you'd like these if you're lucky to get them fresh!

Sausage: Over cooked, dry, cold. Didn't feel like a proper chippy sausage... Almost felt like it was oven cooked? Defo wasn't fresh.

Gravy: Actually really nice. It was the perfect thickness and had decent flavour, just wish the pots were larger.

Fish: Apparently nothing to write home about. They use haddock not cod.

My overall consensus - I won't be...

Went here a few weeks after it opened and was pleased with the food and overall service, however I went back on Fri and was deeply disappointed. Firstly when you order via the in shop tablets the picture for the special shows a photo of fush & chips + 2 sides. When you select that it then rakes you to the sides which they charge extra for. This is deeply confusing as ut turns out the 2 sides shown on the image are not included in the price...it took me 5 mins and 3 attempts to order to work this out I gave up and ordered at the counter and when I mentioned mmthis I was told that the picture was for 'illustration' purposes only!.. well just put a pic of what's actually included then??...makes no sense...Anyway after placing the order & waiting 15mins for the food I got home looking forward to a nice Friday chippy tea...so disappointed, aside from the tiny sides [which cost £1.95 each] the gray was like an oxo cube thickened with cornflour and the fish was terrible, myst have been 80% batter, so greasy and so dry...am no expert but I have tasted probably the best fish in gbe country at the Magpie cafe in whitby so know what a good fish tastes like, I wasn't expecting that but for the amount of fish that mother hubbards must get through I would have expected it to be prepared and cooked properly. I won't be returning anytime soon which is a shame as my first experience there was good but obviously standard Ms have skipped...

Our first visit. We took my Dad for his birthday, we thought sitting in would be a nice experience. It’s a lovely, clean, big space. You go upto the counter to order/pay at the same time from a very extensive menu. They charge for sauces too which are quite small pots, so if you like ketchup, you’ll need to pay for more than one. We sat down and our food was brought to us. We had no idea that we would be served on paper trays with wooden cutlery to sit in and eat. If we’d known this, we probably would have ordered it as a takeaway as it wasn’t so easy to eat with the wooden cutlery they provided. The fish was cooked well and very tasty. BUT the chips were shocking! Every other one was black or rotten…how they thought it was acceptable to serve these is beyond me? It wasn’t just the odd one, it was every portion. It was also very easy to see and visible. Between us there was almost a full portion that was left. It’s all very well having an extensive menu, but if you can’t get the basics right - which in my opinion, the chips are pretty important - then it might be worth concentrating on getting them right before offering anything else. Overall, a very disappointing experience and a bit of shame as it was supposed to be a birthday treat which didn’t really meet any of our expectations. Unfortunately, even though it’s local to all 4 of us, we definitely wont be...
