The most horrific experience. Our first and last time here! Upon arrival, We placed our orders, n proceeded to feed our toddlers with some food we had brought from home (as they do not eat Thai food). This is a common practice parents do and restaurants do not mind it as children have their own food preferences, and any human should respect that as they are just small children. The lady who took our order, came over to us and yelled at us for feeding our toddlers the piece of chicken we brought from home, although we explained to her that they do not eat Thai food. Yet she still continue to yell pointing at the food we are feeding our little babies with a disgusted face. Then she proceeded to go on n on about it and complain about it to her colleagues in Thai right in front of us (Im not Thai but I understand the Thai language), while she kept staring at us with anger and disgust at the food we were feeding our little children. It was very disrespectful and disturbing, as these are our own small kids who were hungry. This went on throughout the entire time we were there and each time she passed our table. Then she went on to come back to me and told me to get my little babies to eat it up quickly so she n no one else would see it anymore. She said her manager would scold her n she would get in trouble. I told her to please let me speak to her manager which she later told me she was the manager. So was she lying and claiming to be the manager now? I had already lost my appetite to eat by then, and I wish I had left the restaurant, but we had already ordered a lot of food and we didn't feel it was right to leave while our food was already being prepared.
Our friend's baby dropped his shoe, n one of the staff picked it up n THREW it at the mother. To add to this fiasco, a waitress brought one of the dishes and said "beef curry". My friend (who does not eat beef for religious reasons) asked her "is this beef or chicken?". The lady took a look at the dish and rudely said "Chicken", to which my friend asked "Are u sure?". The waitress said, again rudely, "you taste and find out"!!!
By then we could no longer take any more of the abuse we were getting from the staff and decide to leave before even having our main meals. We finally told them that they are being very rude and ask for the bill. Which the staff then said we did not need to pay and everything she did was her way of sending the message to us that our children shouldn't be eating food we brought in and if we were not happy with that, we can leave without paying. Should we have let our kids starve then ?
We came here because of all the good reviews on Google as we wanted to have a good dinner with our best friends but It was an extremely horrific, unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. It spoilt our entire day, and as a parent I felt very attacked, discriminated, disturbed and disappointed with the way this restaurant and its staff treated us and our children. I would never return to this restaurant. Food vice, far far from authentic Thai. Not worth the money...
Read moreWe arrived in time for an early lunch and were seated at the front of the restaurant which was completely open - this means fresh air, sunshine and the hustle and bustle of Swan Street (screaming children).
As the tables around us filled up, we noticed the clientele was mainly businessmen having meetings. I guess if you want to impress a client with your sophistication, you could do worse that take them to The Art Kitchen. The service was efficient though almost comically abrupt.
Soft shell crab: Even though it’s a starter, it’s a £12 starter, so I was pleased to see plenty of crab on the plate. I did not expect deep-fried crab to be so juicy and flavourful. The batter’s delicate crunchiness complemented the crab instead of just encasing it. The salad was crisp and fresh with a tasty dressing.
The Pad Thai looked amazing sitting on a square of banana leaf. The crushed peanuts were mysteriously secreted under a corner of the banana leaf - good to have the option, I merrily mixed them in. This enhanced the perfect sweet and sour flavour of the dish which was expertly calibrated to satisfy and not overwhelm. The noodles were just right although the sauce was on the oily side. The prawns were a let down compared to the juicy crab starter - rubbery and not much flavour. Next time I will make use of the lime, which I neglected even though it was skewered into the middle of the dish.
I ordered the deep fried ice cream out of skepticism. Five minutes later this miracle of science appeared before me in the form of a scotch egg. A scotch egg where the egg is ice cream and the meat is dough. Visually, it’s very satisfying to cut into the “egg” and have ice cream ooze out. The outside is perfectly crispy, the inside of the dough is on the bready side which is ok as it’s soaked in ice cream. The ice cream wasn’t your average vanilla - very rich and intense flavour. I was not a fan of the cooked banana slices - there’s just something slimily sinister about warm banana. Warm like it had been in someone’s pocket all morning. Thankfully there is more to The Art Kitchen than banana (nice leaves though) and I look forward...
Read moreWe booked a table for 5 at The Art Kitchen for an evening meal in May. In the booking notes online we asked if we could sit upstairs. Upon arriving we were given the choice of a table downstairs in the centre of the bustling restaurant or we could go to sit upstairs where we would be the only ones up there. We chose to sit upstairs and it felt like we had our own private dining experience!!!
We thought being tucked away upstairs we might get forgotten about, but it was quite the opposite. The service was outstand. friendly, chatty and super attentive - consistently coming back to check on us, if we needed more drinks and if everything was okay with our food.
The restaurant was spotless and our food, which was freshly made to order arrived fantastically quickly. We ordered a selection of mixed starters to share - chicken satay, prawn toast, ribs, and vegetable spring rolls. Not only did they look amazing but the portion sizes were remarkable....not the tiny stuff you get at a take away or in a supermarket! It was quality and quantity.
I had the chicken pad Thai - my favourite - which was amazing. There was plenty of chicken and it wasn't too salty either which can sometimes be the case. The same was the case with the Prawn pad Thai which has huge prawns throughout! The rest of the party had the Thai curry - again there was plenty of chicken, gorgeous pieces of aubergine and it wasn't too spicey for them either.
The food was beautifully presented and we ALL agreed it was the best Thai food we have ever had....two of whom have actually been to Thailand!
Thai food is my favourite, and I have been wanting to try Thai Kitchen for a long time after hearing so many good things about it, and I can honestly say it didn't disappoint! The food was excellent quality, there was such a warm and welcoming atmosphere and I can't wait to go back again and try something new.
