Evelyn's Coffee & Banh Mi — Restaurant in Akron

Checked out this awesome now Mom and Pop place in downtown Akron. Tucked into an unassuming corner with free parking off to the side, this is a cute little coffee shop that specializes in Vietnamese coffee, sweet, strong and creamy. They also have traditional coffee items and pastries as well as some authentic southeast Asian street foods like multiple varieties of Ban Mi sandwiches. My favorite was the chicken meatball but we also enjoyed the Dac Biet. There was no jalapeños in the sandwiches, but I didn't miss them.

Taro milk tea with Boba was creamy and delicious, not too sweet which I appreciated. Papaya Salad was delicious--crunchy tart and and refreshing. We also enjoyed the Vietnamese salad, and actually enjoyed putting it into our Banh Mi's. My kids went to town on the Boba tea.

The staff were polite and professional and hygienic precautions were followed. There is no sit down dining for now but they say that they will open it up as the pandemic hopefully lessens.

Went for the first time on a Wednesday afternoon. Parking can be a challenge only bc I am not sure if the connected lot is for guest. I saw a sign that said "permits only." I took the chance and parked there anyway and was fine.

I was excited to try this place based on all the positive reviews. Upon entering I was not greeted. I had a few questions as I have never been to this place and have some dietary restrictions. The girl at the register seemed irritated by my questions as evidenced by her facial expressions. Another girl came out and attempted to answer my questions but it was the same thing in that she appeared irritated too. I even tried to engage her by asking which milk tea is her fave and asking what she suggest. She did not answer either question but just kind of looked at me. I ended up going with the taro milk tea. It was just okay.

Interestingly another person came in after me and she perked up a bit and at least asked her if she had ever been in and had the tea that she ordered.

I'm participating in Akron's Drip Drive this year by checking out all the local coffee shops in Akron, and Evelyn's has quickly become my new favorite spot by far! Their Vietnamese coffee is delicious, and I got to try a lemongrass bahn mi when I went back on a weekend and it was heavenly. But then I stopped there another week day morning before work for a coffee & bahn mi, but was sad to learn their kitchen didn't open until after 10am. Which means I'll never get to bring a bahn mi to work with me to have for lunch :( My heart broke a little as I don't work close enough to Evelyn's to drive back there midday. I wonder how many others tried to order a bahn mi in the morning for breakfast or lunch but couldn't. These hours are not clear on the website either unfortunately. I wish I could leave a 4.5 stars for this reason but yeah. I hope they have plans to expand their kitchen hours soon!!! But I'll definitely be back for at least the...
