There are a ton of tourist/gift shops in downtown Anchorage...all of them are very similar...except for the Kobuk which feels more historic (because it is) and offers unique tea, donuts, and other treats at their one-of-a-kind spot in the back of the store.
When we walked in to the store (in search of donuts) we were immediately handed a sample of their samovar tea which my wife liked so much that she bought a couple packs to take home.
We found our way back to the small cafe to be greeted by a display case of delicious-looking donuts, including unique, Alaska-only flavors like Samovar (the spices from the samovar tea included in the donut glaze) and Fireweed. They've got some "regular" flavors too...everything looked really good.
We got the samovar and fireweed donuts...we loved them both. My wife also had some of the tea...they've got more baked goods including scones and a daily soup.
The place has a long and rich history in Anchorage which you can read about in the displays in the cafe.
If you're looking for a unique treat, very good donuts, or souvenirs different from what they have at all the other shops downtown, you definitely should pop in here...it's a wonderful bit of Anchorage history...
Read moreSo I heard so much about this place (reviews, YouTube, tour manager, fellow travelers). Thus, I can't leave Anchorage without visiting it. I was set to taste the famous Samovar glazed and Fireweed glazed donut. I was expecting something that tastes extraordinary, but it's just okay for me. Could it be that it was not freshly made? Like not fresh from the oven, I was expecting that it would be hot and tasty as what the other described. But nope, I was disappointed and couldn't really differentiate it from other best tasting donuts I had. There were 4 customers, including us, when we came. The cappuccino we ordered took a while to get served. I didn't order the famous Samovar tea. I was able to taste it, though (there's a free tea tasting within the store area). And I can say that Samovar tea is just as what they hype it for...perfectly blended if I may say. I love it and it is worth buying for your stash of...
Read moreI love the Kobuk! We only get to go a couple times a year when we venture down to Anchorage, but this place is amazing. For starters, they have the BEST donuts in all of Alaska. Just suck up the calories and grab one. I promise you won't regret it! Next, their tea blends are delightful. My favorite is the winterberry blend though most people like the samovar. They use essential oils in their tea and it makes the flavor that much more powerful. I LOVE it. Lastly, they have the CUTEST items in their gift shop. I mean if you didn't like donuts and tea, there's still something for you here. They have exactly what you are looking to bring back home if you are vacationing. Just the best gifts and trinkets for your house! Also, they have a full lunch menu with soup for those days that it's a little chilly outside. If you come to visit and walk downtown, you MUST...
