Just don't go. Went and got the fajitas. $17 probably classes it as the most expensive steak and shrimp fajitas I have ever had. But lets get into this fiasco from a "food/chemical poisoning issue" perspective, not a price issue.
We were seated at a dirty table, which isn't terrible. It happens. Hostess said she would clean it and stepped away, to return with a paper napkin and "wipe" the table down. I should have left right there. Instead we ordered appetizer ($6 onion blossom rings). The onion blossoms tasted pretty good, but my appetizer plate was dirty. I shrugged it off and set it to the side but it should have been my second sign to just leave.
We ordered (steak for my partner, previously mentioned fajitas for me). Had the flour tortillas replaced with corn and I really wish I hadn't. When the tortillas came to my table, I thought I caught a whiff of, of all things, toilet urinal cakes. Figured I must have just smelt something weird off of someone near me, or maybe I was near the bathrooms, and loaded up my first tortilla. I put that should-have-been-delicious mess of steak and shrimp in my face and quickly realized that the toilet urinal cake was coming off of the corn tortillas. This says to me that this restaurant is storing their food items near cleaning items in the back. I have worked years in kitchens and have had OSHA food sanitation training. Chemicals are kept away from food because the smells and worst, the chemicals, leech out and into absorbent foods. I had my partner sniff/taste the tortilla to confirm that I wasn't losing my mind, and then had to flag a waiter to take them from my table because the smell became so strong that I couldn't eat. It was just another sign that I should have stopped and left, because we're still not done with this review. Thankfully, the fajita filling tasted alright. The beans were served in a runny mess, more liquid than bean, and partway through, I started to find random veggies. Some of it was clearly the pico de gallo, but other veg that weren't in that showed up as well. So I stopped eating the beans. And I had still another sign I should have just stopped eating everything.
I took a few more bites, but I was honestly so nauseated still by the toilet-cake-tasting corn tortillas that I didn't have much of an appetite anymore. Forever the stubborn person I am, not wanting to let $17 of even mediocre, low-quality food go to waste, I asked for a to-go container and loaded up the significant amount of steak and shrimp (I only ate about a third of that). And...
Well, let me explain first, that the fajitas are served on a cast iron plate nestled in a wooden holding box. I am assuming cooked part on that plate, as well. I picked up my pieces of steak and there was a scum underneath. The scum was the sort anyone who has ever pan-fried a steak knows. Its that nasty, gelatinous brown scum that happens when you let the steak juices and bits that got stuck to the bottom of the pan sit overnight. Maybe, suggested my partner, it was just from this freshest of steaks I had supposedly been served. I scrapped it with a fingernail and, by its greasy, gritty texture, knew immediately that it was old. Now, I didn't need further confirmation of this, but just because the world wanted me to know for sure, I found more of it where the steak had not even touched the plate -- under the shrimp, AND under the rice.
I haven't started throwing up yet but I've been on the verge of it ever since we ate.
Total bill was $50. I paid $50 for an appetizer and two small mains that tasted mediocre and were served atrociously, and might have poisoned me.
The menu costs alone are enough to keep me from going back often, but I will definitely never go back with how poor the sanitation was.
When will 0 stars become an option? Oh, and something I forgot to say on Yelp review -- the napkins also had a chemical smell to them, and the restaurant itself definitely had its own "odor." I had thought maybe it was the outside seeping in due to the rain, but reading other reviews saying the...
Read moreWe've had our ups and downs with Chilis over the years - a real love / hate relationship. From SUPER slow service to amazing servers we enjoyed like family, we've had a sampling of every level of service over the years and always continued to go back. Our kids are addicted to the chips and salsa and the "two for" dinner, formerly two for twenty, now two for twenty-two, so we keep coming back. No one makes a grilled chicken sandwich with honey mustard like Chili's, or Sunrise burger with grassfed beef. Yes, we eat at Chili's a LOT,to go and dine-in house. you name it, we WERE regulars, until tonight. I will not go back. Tonight was the last straw. From being seated at a dirty table, to a server who looked at us like a dear in headlights as she threw our flatware down on a dirty table which we had to ask to be cleaned, to a server with ZERO menu knowledge, (I'm 99% sure she's never eaten one thing on the menu), to waiting 40 minutes with no food, we're done. After FORTY minutes we told a manager. The restaurant was practically empty so I can't imagine why no one cared to check on us. After FORTY minutes my husband went to the manager to tell her his steak was ordered rare, so if its been sitting up there this long it is overcooked. The manager came to the table and threw "I'll buy you a dessert if you're still hungry when you're done" at us, still without food. She said she was just about to bring our dinner out to us but since we asked for a manager she came to talk to us first. After my husband telling her he didn't want his steak overcooked she let the food come out withered, overcooked, roasted under heat lamps for God knows how long. The corn was shriveled up like dried corn on a Thanksgiving centerpiece. The steak barely had pink left. The potatoes had a dried crust on top. The food had just been sitting for who knows how long. The food quality was not the kitchen's fault. The food quality was the team of servers and management who let it sit, and sit, without taking it out. Worse, was the fact that this was brought to the manager's attention and she admitted to overseeing it and SHE let it come out of the kitchen like it was. It's insulting. We won't' be back. My son, who was starving, left without food and in tears. Never mind that we were hungry. I could've cooked a full dinner in the time we waited. At least we would've eaten. Next time I'll remember how long it took when we long for Chili's two-for dinner and i'll drive to the store. We won't go back and I'll...
Read moreTo say that our experience was bad is putting it nicely. On fathers day my husband wanted chilis for dinner so we placed an online order and that is where it all went wrong. Our food was not ready for 40 minutes past the time our confirmation said it would be. We sat in the parking lot waiting and not one time did anyone apologize, acknowledge us, or say we are sorry we are running behind. After several times of the runner bringing food out to other cars and walking by us, we finally got his attention enough to ask and asked when our order would be ready. The persons' response was the kitchen is backed up and he walked away. Finally, at 6:40, the runner person who I learned later is named Benny, brough our food to the car and he was incredibly rude again. When we questioned why it took so long and why he had an attitude with us about it he stated "man whatever" and stormed off. I asked for his name he refused and the other worker stated "I forgot his name". I walked inside in to speak with the manager and Benny followed me inside waiving his hands and being threatening. He continued to stand behind me while I tried to speak to the manager. The whole experience was so scary and threatening and honestly I just can't believe the nerve of this person and the manager for not stopping Hai behavior. He then walked back out and by my car mouthing off at my husband, my husband asked if he had something he wanted to say and he then said "man whatever I can clock out and we can handle this right here in the parking lot!" Are you kidding me, here it is fathers day and all we are trying to do is pick up dinner for our family. My husband texted me and said LET'S GO NOW!!!! so I just walked out because it was clear this situation was out of control and no one was going to do anything to fix it. This is outrageous behavior for someone in the hospitality industry and we will not be returning anytime soon. I will make it a point to share with everyone I know about what a terrible experice we had at...
