Five Guys — Restaurant in Ankeny

OK...I grew up in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida so I'm not a typical Mid-Westerner. Not saying Midwestern Folks are cheap per se however they do tend to lean that way. I like to think of VALUE when I purchase a good and/or service. Went to 5 Guys for the very first time today for lunch. First impression was this wasn't a typical midwestern hamburger joint. Lots of LOUD yelling at the customers by what seemed like the entire staff. Interesting, didn't bother my 19 year old Son however I thought it to be a bit over the top! Ordered 2 "Regular" Cheese Burgers with raw onions and mine with a tomato. Ordered a "Medium" fries. Chocolate and Peanut Butter shake for me and Oreo Creme and Bits for Junior. Cheeseburgers were very good, shakes were excellent and I liked the "natural" Fries, my Son not so much. Really could use a few different "dipping sauces" like hot mustard, ranch, etc for the fries. All 5 Guys had at this location was the obligatory ketchup and malt vinegar. To be fair if I had asked they might have produced mustard or ranch or even a Zesty sauce but I didn't want to be a bother. Now the bill...OMG! $37.00 for 2 large Burgers, 1 large fries and 2 SMALL milkshakes! I hope the starting wage for a Part time employee is at least $15 per hour...should be at these prices! I realize Zombie Burger, Smash Burger would have cost almost as much...maybe. The thing is this is IOWA for God's sake...offer RANCH DRESSING! Over all great food and interesting atmosphere but at New York City, Boston or Los Angeles prices! Might be back when I sell...

The manager yelled at us a cross the establishment that my husband's service dog could not be in "this establishment take it to the car". We have identification papers and her dog carrier is clearly marked with a bright metal plate identifying her as a service dog. The employee was rude and did not treat us with respect. Service dogs can not be kicked out of hamburger places. Instead of walking over to is and asking for our dogs paperwork, the employee yelled multiple times across the place in front of other customers. The food was mediocre at best when it was hot. Awful when we finished it at home. Before we left I asked the young lady if I could speak to her manager. She said "I am the manager ". My husband served our country and does not deserve this disrespect. If she would have mentioned that service dogs are not allowed here, we would have turned around and left. The first time I had there food, it wasn't the greatest. So I decided to try it again with my boyfriend. We went to try it out, since the first time I tried it, it was delivered, so I'd give it the benefit of the doubt that it was bad cause it wasn't fresh. So we went in and got hamburgers, with everything we wanted on them and a small fry. The fries had more flavor than the burgers did. It was the same as the first time I tried them. My boyfriend said it was a good thing he put jalapeños on it or it would have really sucked. The stuff I put on was the only flavor you could taste. They don't put any salt or pepper or any kind of flavoring at all.
