Liberty House was recommended to me when in Asheville, and as soon as I was told, “they also serve food, and make some things from their own garden,” I was in. A coffee shop that has their own home-grown produce on the property? Who has heard of such a thing?!
Well, I didn’t eat anything from the garden, but I’m not exaggerating when I say I ate the best pancake I’ve yet eaten in my life. A sourdough pancake (already amazing, as a lover of all things sourdough), cooked with a slight crisp on the exterior. I’d never seen a typical American pancake that had a crisped exterior, but from now on, I’ll be eating every future pancake wistfully wishing for the toasty crackle which welcomes your mouth into the pancake experience. The pancake was filled with blueberries (classic), and served with a generous pat of good butter and Vermont maple syrup. The amazing pancake even avoided the dreaded syrup-sponge-syndrome that is typical of your standard pancake (I’m not sure whether this was due to the dough, the crispy exterior, or some combination of factors) - the syrup they gave me remained, delicately coating the cake, for the duration of the meal. People may look at the menu and think, “$9 for one pancake?!” but I assure you, the $9 pancake tastes like a bargain, even at that price.
My fiancée had a roasted duck hash, a delightful mishmash of a typically rough-around-the-edges campsite meal and high-class indulgence. Delightfully crispy potatoes, layered in with kale, some sort of delicious sausage, sweet onions, and topped with, yes, sliced duck breast. She declared it, “the best savory breakfast I’ve ever had,” and, if it weren’t for a couple of absolute stunner brunches I’ve had over the years, I’d be inclined to agree. Duck is not something I would ever think to bring to breakfast (much less in a dish like hash), but it really, really worked.
The drinks were good as well. My fiancée enjoyed an oat milk latte she described as “like a warm hug,” while I sipped the “Mountain Fog,” an Ashevillian take on the London Fog with local honey and lavender.
We arrived at about 9:45am, and were glad it was not a minute later - we sat down next to the only occupied table in the expansive outdoor space, and left to the sight of filled tables across the property and a line out the door.
I highly recommend enjoying breakfast here - get the...
Read moreWow, I'm in shock. My wife and I just had our first negative experience with a rude and argumentative server here or anywhere in Asheville for that matter. Worse, management immediately sided with the server rather than mediate the situation. Maybe the server was having a bad day or just doesn't have service skills and is in the wrong job (it happens), but an immediate and simple apology would have sufficed and we could move on. We've been frequent customers, tip generously to support the staff, and recommend Liberty often, but now we don't want to go back. I guess they don't care. I generally don't leave negative reviews as I simply don't go back to places that leave me with a negative experience. Nevertheless, I'm updating my original five star review as this recent service experience and management response left an unusually bad taste in my mouth. I'm truly stunned.
After we moved to Asheville recently, a local friend recommended Liberty to my wife and I. We were not disappointed. The mocha was probably the best I've ever had and easily the smoothest, the chocolate perfectly balanced with the complexity of the Kilimanjaro espresso, a mocha for coffee connoisseurs, not a sugary candy drink like so many others. All the treats are top-notch, fresh, and local. The breakfast and lunch food is fantastic, gourmet class. In fact, the Epic Breakfast Sandwich topped two of my all-time favorites from San Diego and LA, something I didn't think possible until it happened. Add a charming, cozy interior, great outside seating, an eclectic and friendly clientele, a lively neighborhood scene with the yoga center next door, and a warm, impeccable staff: what have you got? I like to think of it as simply The...
Read moreVery possibly my favorite Asheville coffee shop. Outstanding creative drink specials, well-pulled espresso. Sometimes oat milk lattes can be too, well, “oaty,” but not here! Staff is super friendly and takes care to remember their regulars and semi-regulars.
The menu always features specials and many items rotate daily and monthly. My only complaint is that they are so popular that there can be a lengthy wait at times. There is a line formed every single morning before they even open the door. Because of this the kitchen can start to run behind and has occasionally lost track of my order. That being said, they are all so sweet and you can tell they are operating at capacity and doing their best to keep up with the rush—I can forgive a lot when the food and drinks are just that good.
Delicious items I’ve had and would recommend: The burger here was an unexpected delight, well balanced, flavorful, not too tall or sloppy, not dry. Quality all the way around. The pancake is like no other pancake I’ve ever had. Very unique, very tasty. The croque madame is very classic and exactly what you want out of that dish. The mole grit bowl is packed with flavor. Butternut squash soup is very cozy and comforting.
Favorite Pastries the raspberry croissant is properly flaky, a high quality laminated dough -salted caramel swirl is highly unique, super sweet though, these are...
