Tucked into Austin’s Hyde Park, New World Deli is a neighborhood spot that delivers comfort food with heart. This cozy deli punches way above its weight in flavor, friendliness, and quality. It’s casual and unpretentious on the surface — but behind the counter, there’s serious attention to quality, balance, and flavor. It’s a place where classic comfort food gets just enough of a culinary upgrade to keep regulars coming back — and first-timers pleasantly surprised. I chose four dishes you might like to try, that people I talked to said they like best. I have tried all but the Sloppy Joe. Reuben Sandwich A perfect balance of rich, tender corned beef, sharp sauerkraut, creamy Russian dressing, and perfectly grilled rye. The proportions are spot-on, avoiding the soggy, overloaded pitfall that plagues many versions of this deli classic. Easily one of the most frequently praised items on the menu — and with good reason. This is my "go-to" when I am there. Buffalo Cauliflower This vegetarian standout is crisp, spicy, and addictive. Lightly breaded and tossed in a tangy Buffalo sauce, it's proof that bar-style apps can be elevated with thoughtful execution. Ideal as a shareable starter or a meatless main. “New Jersey” Sloppy Joe This double-decker rye sandwich layers house-roasted meats, Swiss cheese, creamy coleslaw, and Russian dressing for a rich, indulgent bite. It’s messy in the best way — nostalgic, but with cleaner, more deliberate flavors than you'd expect from something called a "Sloppy Joe." Philly Cheesesteak One of the more underrated items on the menu. It features thinly sliced steak, sautéed onions and peppers, and melted provolone, all nestled in a soft hoagie roll. It’s satisfying and generous without being greasy — a difficult balance that many miss, but New World Deli nails it. We also did a series on the Best Cheesesteaks in the area (not necessarily a Philly), but it deserves some love. Beyond the food, the space is cozy and lived-in, with a rotating art wall and occasional live jazz adding a layer of charm. It’s the kind of place that welcomes everyone — families, perfecr for date night or for remote workers who need a lunchtime break. New World Deli is a rare find — a low-key neighborhood spot that delivers high-level consistency, flavor, and service. It’s ideal for anyone looking for real deli fare with thoughtful preparation and a touch of Austin character. Whether you're in the mood for a perfectly composed Reuben or a plate of surprisingly excellent cauliflower, this deli doesn’t just satisfy — it impresses!...
Read moreI just ordered to-go from here and got the Reuben and avocado veggie (and technically the “Mixed Deli,” as you’ll see below). I dropped in to pick up my order and got all of the family-owned vibes that I enjoy; super friendly staff that greeted me and a feeling that they seemed to care about their product/customers.
When I got home, I did notice that they had accidentally given me “The Mixed Deli” rather than the Reuben that I had ordered. I quickly called them up to ensure that I didn’t make a mistake and take the wrong bag - they offered a hundred ways to make it right, but I just wanted my Reuben, so I went back to grab it.
Quickly said, the Reuben was one of the best I’ve ever had. The sandwich was well-balanced with the salty-tangy flavor that you look for in a good Reuben. Just a fantastic sandwich.
The avocado veggie came with hummus that I wish I would have tried on its own and incredibly soft bread. I’m not a vegetarian sandwich fan, but I liked it a lot - this one was ultimately my girlfriend’s, and she said she’d eat it weekly.
Lastly, the accidental sandwich - the mixed deli. This one screams “classic deli” all the way, and while it’s not the sandwich I’d typically order, I still found it to be amazing; a handful of cold-cuts that were run through the garden on a hoagie (style) bread. Really was surprised by this one and would order it again in the future (it didn’t hurt that it ended up...
Read moreWe were looking for an awesome Philly Cheesesteak for sentimental reasons so checked out New World based on reviews. Walking in, the menu and dessert case looked fabulous & they had an open mic night sort of thing going on with several folks taking turns playing in stage. Very fun and interesting atmosphere and the staff was exceptional! The sweet potato fries were really good - hot, crispy but not burnt, & perfectly seasoned. But not everything went as well…. The iced tea was sour so we switched to water. The sandwiches we took home to the dogs after not being able to take more than a bite each - minimal onions, peppers, & mushrooms and no kind of sauce except au jus as was suggested by the cashier. And the cheese was not right for a Philly - it was soft and tasted like a softer cheese than regular provolone. It was not enough to make the sandwich worth the calories. After spending $59 I expected to have dinner but we left and went elsewhere. Loved the vibe but maybe just for coffee...
