Polvos... plovos is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Austin. Polvos has the best of the best Margarita 🍹 drinks in Austin!! As well as Mexican food. My first time at polvos was in 2005. Since then.. my order is always CHORIQUESO as the main plate, no as an entrée... And of course, the Margarita 🍹 drink. Chiriqueso is made it with three kinds of cheese, poblano rajas pepper and Pico de Gallo, all mixed and grilled. It comes with the choice of fresh hand-made corn tortilla or flour tortilla.

But that doesn't mean it is the only good dish. No. All the many are great !! How do I know... through the years, I invite friends, family, co-workers, and clients who are looking for a good Mexican restaurant in Austin. And every body have a good experience at Polvos. Polvos has two areas to join in the restaurant. The outside patio or the inside restaurant. Both are great to have fun and enjoy a great dinner or some good drinks from Polvos bar. Also, Polvos has their self served salsa bar. With three kinds of salsas. And carrots 🥕 pickles... soooo delicious!! I'm watering my mouth just thinking about it.

If you are looking for a fancy and formal place to have dinner.. Probably Polvos isn't your option to go. Polvos is one of those local restaurants in Austin with mexican decorations.. super relaxed and easygoing atmosphere to just join your dinner, meet friends, and make new ones 😀. Dogs friendly. The bathroom area is incredibly amazing.. Very artistic experience 👌. Since you arrived at Polvos, the hosts people give you a friendly welcome and make you feel as if you are a Polvos family member. Then, before the waiter stops at your table, the service assistant brings you a cup of ice water with a tortilla chips basket. AMAZING!! then the waiter comes, takes your drinks order, and keeps the regular service like in every restaurant service. Doesn't matter who's your waiter.. they have the politic to provide the best service in the world!! Great , great high standard 👏 from a local restaurant. That makes you feel special and very well appreciated as a guest. Not as a regular client... No.. as a GUEST!! THEIR GUEST!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND POLVOS AT SOUTH FIRST STREET.

location: South First Street. South Austin. Price: affordable price. Bar: Excelent bar! Parking: very limited free parking. But with the option to park by the street. Safe walk even at night time. Customer service: EXCELLENT!!

Polvos has a kids menu. Gluten-free dishes. Vegan and vegetarian dishes as well.

Sorry.. this time, as the other times, I didn't take pictures because I like to join my time at polvos.

Maybe next...

Really good food. Authentic classic Mexican American. The Caso was amazing w/ salsa and fresh Guacamole. Huevos Ranchero was amazing. The Stuffed peppers are amazing as well. Nice little out of the way place. Update: Service is very hit or miss at this location. Day time manager behind the bar and staff reheated the caso I asked to be remade, and tried to pass it off as fresh food. Then after confronting the manager about it was told " We don't remake food! " (?!) Once I had it remade a second time, was told not to ask again. Once again another place that lies about their procedure and service. Seems to be a running trend in The City of Austin Texas. Then tonight I was rushed through My meal, and told by the server that " I needed to hurry up!!,... And pay so He can go Home!" This server was so busy on his phone that he only refilled My water once. Otherwise kept asking me if I wanted a Togo box...(!?) And didn't bring Me anything else I actually asked for, including simple things like extra napkins. Because He was to busy on His phone. Carlos the night Manager was very respectful and polite, and gave me a discount for the horrible service. I told Him I didn't want to get anyone in trouble, I just didn't like being rushed, and interrupted while trying to enjoy my meal and take care of some business in my phone. Then to top it off The server acted as if I was rude to Him because I didn't just drop everything to accommodate Him. ( Especially when 3 different servers were serving Me. Confusing. Then after asking the manager if I could get a glass of water Togo and a Togo box ( since I wasn't done yet but was being urged to leave ). The manager then had the server bring out to Me a Togo box and water. Then the server over and over said I was the Best customer ever!!! Sarcastically and then blew me a kiss and winked at Me?!?! How professional. I should have asked for all of my money back. Carlos great manager,Host in the front w/ long curly hair professional and decent people. The rest is completely Hit or Miss. Changing My review from 5 Stars to 2 Stars ⭐ Be aware of this strange entitled mind v*rus taking over most people's common sense these days. Polvos, on South 1st, has been a lunch spot of mine for about 15 years, and it rarely disappoints. It has that old school,  border town vibe, with a big beamed ceiling, glazed tile counter tops, bold artwork and fresh tortillas being made in the corner of the dining room. I think the only thing missing were the colorful party banners hanging from the ceiling. As of this writing they are still using QR codes to get a menu on your phone, whereas everywhere else I've been has gone back to using regular paper menus. One of the things I love about this place is the self serve salsa bar, and my favorite thing on it are the big chunky slices of spicy pickled carrots. And the green salsa is absolutely fantastic. Now, to be perfectly honest about this last visit, there was a mistake with my order. But one that I am happy that was made.  I ordered chicken enchiladas with a tomatillo sauce, and what I recieved was mole sauce instead.  I was a bit disappointed when my plate arrived, but that disappointment was relieved as soon as I took the first bite. The chicken was tender and juicy, and there was ample cheese throughout.  This mole sauce was smokey with just the right amount of sweetness and not at all bitter, like some I've tried. The Carne Guisada taco was filled just the right amount, except for the one grisly piece on the end (again not a big deal). The portions are very generous.  And everything came out fresh and hot. My waitress Leticia was friendly and very attentive without being overbearing or making you feel rushed. I am very proud to say that Polvos will continue to be one of my favorite lunch spots whenever I'm in...

Don't Be Fooled by Polvos In a city known for outstanding Mexican cuisine, Polvos has perfected the art of deceiving customers through hidden charges and questionable practices. At their downtown location, they serve a measly single tortilla per person with their "two-person" fajitas, then have the audacity to charge extra for additional tortillas – a basic item complimentary at any respectable Mexican restaurant. The South 1st location takes the deception even further. They pre-emptively add a credit card "convenience fee" before you even choose your payment method, and automatically tack on gratuity for small parties of just four people. It's a calculated strategy to extract every possible penny from diners. Here's what should worry you most: If a restaurant is willing to nickel-and-dime you so blatantly at checkout, imagine what corners they're cutting in the kitchen where you can't see. In a city blessed with countless authentic Mexican restaurants that treat their customers with respect, there's absolutely no reason to waste your money at a place that seems more focused on sneaky surcharges than serving quality food. Save yourself the frustration and dine elsewhere. Your wallet – and your dignity – will thank you.
