The place falls in the category of " hole in the wall". You know that place that only locals go to for the great food, and others stay away because of the poor curb appeal. We ended up here solely based on searching for good mexican food near me. We are out of Houston. When we pulled up, I was like.....ahhhh. I don't know, but my husband was like, let's give it a try. There was a second car of family members following us and so we were a party of 5. So ok. Here is my rating justification. I have to ding them 2 stars for two things. Otherwise, I would have given them 5 stars for this class of similar restaurants. 1st lost star was the lack of friendliness of the women serving the food. They just were not friendly. Quick and efficient, but no smiles which is a universal language. We had never experienced that before. My husband finally got one of them to flash a quick smile near the end of the meal. The manager, who spoke English, however, was wonderful. 2nd star loss was on the refried beans .....which have received complaints on other Google reviews. The beans were so watered down. They were this thin, watery paste. It is better to simply substitute with something else. The watery refried beans will not fool anyone. After this everything else was great..taste of the food, hot, served quickly, large portions. If in Austin again, I would give them another chance and hopefully can raise this rating. Oh about the location. The restuarant is a part of a very old hotel. The bathrooms are outside, but clean. What I like about this place is it felt like I was in some rural area in Mexico. So very authentic once you step...
Read moreIt makes that rodeway inn $$. As a frequent hotel hopper due to my jobs travel, I was overjoyed when I came across this hidden gem. To be honest the only reason I stayed and became a frequent visitor was due to this restaurant. Looks can and are deceiving when it comes to this place. "Chit-hole" exterior comes to mind when thinking of good descriptors of this diamond in the ruff. I didn't even mind that the majority of the staff didn't speak English after my first accidental rendezvous for a nearby bite to eat. I walked from my rodeway darkroom dungeon all dressed for bed upset at the loud yip's and revs of big trucks that I heard outside and thought I'd see what all the commotion was about, tummy grumbling in agitation... to my surprise the restaurant was almost empty and the noise was just passing vehicles on 183. I was told to seat myself and there began my journey. When the salsa and queso are good it sez alot. The cut veggies and the temperature and seasoning of the meat, rice and beans were spot on. The price?!? Who needs a dollar and sum change menu when you can have this for 2 or 3 bucks more?? The lemonade was yummy as well! Bottled beverages from alcoholic to soda, and drinks native to the cuisine. Trust me... it's worth your time and penny to...
Read moreMy new favorite local Mexican restaurant. Their chips and salsa are homemade and you can tell just by looking at it. I love their creamy salsa verde! I’ve only eaten here a few times but every single time it just hits. I rarely crave mexican food honestly but ever since being introduced to this place… mmmhmmm🤤 (Words cannot describe). The pics i’m attaching with this review was their burrito, which i know doesn’t really scream AUTHENTIC MEXICAN but it still slapped. The variety of hot sauce accessible on the table is great as well since i didn’t have to call them over. Although servers didn’t speak much English I had no problem understanding them or them understanding me plus the fact that they always are smiling was just contagious. I also got their horchata which was huge to say the least. Also if the picture doesn’t show it their portions are giants and honestly prices are very affordable. Whoever leaves comments like their prices were cheaper when they checked online must have viewed photos of their menu from prior years (Hello, there is such a thing called inflation!) Now i did ended up paying $25 for my meal but honestly which how big it was… i count it as a two meals (even the drink) I cannot...
