How my girlfriend almost died eating at Waba Grill 99th And McDowell.
She has a peanut allergy.
We ate here 2 weeks ago. She ordered a Tofu Veggie Bowl (doesn't contain nuts).
I also ordered the same. Nothing happened, we really enjoyed our meal.
We came back yesterday. She ordered the Tofu Veggie Bowl (again doesn't contain nuts). I also ordered something without nuts because obviously don't want to kill her.
30 minutes later she suddenly is red, can't breath well, and is sweating and crying.
15 minutes after that she is almost completely unconscious and almost not breathing at all.
Paramedics arrive (which they confirmed her reaction was caused by Waba Grill) and state that if we had waited any longer her airways would have completely closed and that she would have died.
I come back the next day and ask to speak to the manager. I asked her if there was any sort of nuts in ANY of the ingredients on their menu. She said "we do not have any nuts on our menu". I then asked if they cooked in any sort of nut oil or have anything that would trigger a peanut allergy. She said no.
Sure enough I ask for the ingredient menu which also lists any allergies that can be triggered. I look at the menu and read that "P" stands for "Peanut Allergy" and "T" stands for "Treenut Allergy".
I go through the menu and EXACTLY 5 items on the menu correspond to have a nut allergy.
I then point this out to her and she doesn't seem to understand the allergy part of the menu.
I then have to explain to her what every letter stands for in HER own store menu.
She then back peddles and says that "oh well I meant her dish did not have peanuts".
AND THIS is what leads to my point.
Her dish did not have any peanuts, nuts, or related allergies listed on the menu. Somehow she still had a reaction?
This leads me to FIRMLY believe that the utensils used in making the food were not cleaned properly and her food had been contaminated from another dish that had a peanut or nut related reaction associated with it.
Due to someone's pure laziness, or the company's lack of training Krystal's life was almost taken from her and her family at the age of...
Read moreMy friends and I decided to try out this Waba Grill since we heard that there's been a change in management and the 4 for $20 chicken bowl deal was a perfect deal for our group. This is my first time coming to this establishment and they did an excellent job in making this a memorable experience to write about.
When you walk in through the door, you're met with a soft, contemporary design with spacious booths and tables, making it a perfect setting for an intimate occasion or an all out party.
The menu is easy to navigate and the distinction between meat based plates and bowls and its vegetarian counterparts makes this place the ideal neutral ground for a diverse group.
Personally, I ordered the Waba signature plate which comes with a warm bed of white rice, generously topped off with grilled steak and chicken, a side of house salad seasoned with sweet Dijon dressing, and a half-sliced orange. If that doesn't sound delectable enough, you can order a thinly-sliced half-ocado as an add on to complete this ambrosial meal.
Perhaps, I'm infatuated with Waba and I have a voracious appetite for Asian fusion dishes, but let me just say for the price, quality and freshness of the food, and the superb customer service (shout out to my man Moi), there's a method to...
