I come to Big Rapids for work every once in a while and have wanted to check out their resident Chinese restaurant since I first came here. Sadly, it wasn't worth it. Walking in, the restaurant was very dark and didn't seem very clean. Boxes upon boxes were stacked up haphazardly in the kitchen, the floor looked like it could use a good cleaning, and there were exposed wires in the ceiling. I got my food, paid, etc. As I was paying, someone else called and was having trouble communicating with the owner/employee, so she started yelling at them while I was still there. Maybe she was just having a bad day (I've worked food service, I get it), but still pretty unprofessional. There were also political posters and such around the restaurant... Seems like poor taste from a business standpoint.
When I got back to my hotel, I wanted to see if the food lived up to the hype of the Google reviews. I got the wonton soup, steamed dumplings, and chicken lo mein. The Wonton soup was not good. It tasted more like hot and sour soup, and the broth just tasted overly salty and had a weird flavor I'm not even sure how to describe. Seems like a pretty difficult dish to mess up, but either way I couldn't finish it and tossed it. Another note about the soup: it was served in a drink container. I'm not sure if this was because of low stock of regular containers or perhaps to save money, but it risked more of a spilling hazard and was leaking within the seven minutes of me getting from the restaurant to the hotel.
The dumplings were freezer burnt and had a really thick bread-like dough as opposed to a traditional dumpling wrapper. The meat was alright but definitely not very high quality.
The lo mein wasn't terrible, it's not the best I've ever had but I have definitely had much much worse. About average. Definitely needs a change in the cooking oil or a cleaning of the wok though, because the entire dish was pretty dark in color.
Sadly I can't justify coming here again. Maybe the other dishes are better, but paying $34 for mediocre to bad food isn't worth it. Guess I'll be sticking to American food during these work trips...
Read moreI gave 1 star because zero was not an option! The sign at the restaurant says "new owners" so today I decided to try it out. In my opinion if you like traditional Chinese food DO NOT EAT HERE! I spent $50 to try an assortment of things, the egg rolls and crab rangoons were alright although the edges on the crab rangoons were a bit difficult to chew through. The egg drop soup was filled with cilantro and so much pepper it burned my throat and the taste was very off putting. Not to mention it leaves a very oily texture in your mouth. The beef and broccoli tasted freezer burnt although the sauce on top was pretty good. The chicken and broccoli was bland and watery. The chicken for the sweet and sour chicken was so dry it was tough and the sauce looked and tasted watered down. The orange chicken was again dry and bland and definitely not spicy as advertised. The fried rice was flavorless and I honestly think they just took white rice and mixed in some green onions and a little egg. They can post all they want about no artificial color and I still believe it should atleast taste like fried rice. The chicken and mushrooms had very little chicken and mushrooms it was mainly other vegetables with a watery sauce. I felt the portions were too small for the price although if it had tasted better I could have overlooked that. In the end we definitely were not happy and I can guarantee we will not be going back! I will post pictures to show exactly what I have described and the only reason food is missing is because I scooped some out for us to try before taking the pictures and deciding to post this to try to save other people from wasting...
Read moreWow, I’ve NEVER been so poorly treated like this before. I walked in (door slammed very hard upon entering) and said my name and paid for my order with no issue. My order wasn’t prepared, so I waited patiently. Minutes later, I reminded the gentleman to mark my husband’s meal “spicy” (as promised) to keep both separated (I’m not a fan of spicy foods). Once this reminder was spoken, the female cook became angry and told me she put away my order. Stunned, I reminded her that I told the gentleman (guy in dirty orange scrubs) that I needed more time as I hadn’t even checked out of Meijer yet. Everything went sour as the gentleman started swearing at me. He claimed to have called me (no sign of this on my phone at all) asking if I was still coming. I had left my phone out in my car but knew this to be untrue as I saw nothing after loading my weekly groceries in my car. I was called a liar and I told them I was shocked at their poor customer service and that I would NEVER return. “Good, don’t ever come back,” he shouted. I told him I will be reporting this. “Good, you’ll be reporting this to your mother?” I shook my head I disbelief and said, “Oh no, I have plenty of other sources.” I grabbed my food (I surely would have left well before this if I hadn’t already paid for my two month meals). I left with my meals in hand and headed to my car. The female came after me, shaking her finger, saying, “You broke our door. Get out your checkbook out. Yo owe us!”...
