Elie's — Restaurant in Birmingham

I write many reviews and rarely leave negative ones, but our experience at Elie's Grill truly warrants one

We went as a group of 13 people. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a pleasant gentleman, which gave us hope for a good evening. Unfortunately, that changed the moment we were seated. Our waiter was argumentative and unpleasant right from the start. He immediately started complaining about the “problems” with having separate bills, and the poor service continued throughout the night.

The worst part came when we began collecting cash from the group to settle the bill. As I tried to hand my credit card to the waiter, he grabbed the cash instead. When I attempted to clarify the payment method, the chef — who also appeared to be the owner — came out aggressively and stated that a 3.5% fee would be added if I paid by card. I told him the he will regret that as I’d mention this in a review. At that point, he lost all professionalism — swearing, yelling, and acting as if I had personally insulted or threatened him. It was completely uncalled for and deeply uncomfortable.

At that point, I decided it was best to leave both the cash and the situation behind — hopefully that would ease their anger.

We went for a friend's birthday dinner, and let me tell you, there's better places around. First off, and probably the most egregious: $1.75 per person for nestle purelife bottled water? Like, sure. I'd understand if it was sparkling, or at least mineral water, but to not let anyone know they're getting CHARGED FOR WATER at any point in the meal seems more than a bit off. The service was adequate at best. The sever didn't introduce himself, but he didn't pick up on the clear indication that 2/9 people were splitting an app, and instead tried to urge us to get a more expensive dish to share for only 4. One of our two rounds was rang in wrong for a dollar upcharge, which wasn't a big deal, but we felt as if it would be A Thing if we brought it up. The food was okay. I don't personally think it made up for the poor service and overpriced beverages, but the atmosphere and ambiance is where the heft of the price tag comes in. The tables are slightly too close to each other, which beckons to the thought that the owner is just trying to maximize profit by head, rather than providing an intimate experience.
