We went here on a Saturday night after seeing a comedy show at the BJCC. We were excited to visit the rooftop of a beautiful, historic hotel and we were very disappointed. It does feel exclusive, because there is one elevator devoted to taking people to and from the rooftop. Who knows how long we would’ve had to wait if an employee hadn’t badged us into the service elevator. When we got to the top is was SO dark and the paint color makes it feel like a seafood restaurant instead of a swanky rooftop. Then we get to the counter to order and the staff looks absolutely miserable. We were told they were out of a ton of stuff and the only food options were bao buns and queso, as we watched them make what were likely the last 2 pizzas. When deciding on a drink, they also said they were out of a ton of liquor options. The girl behind the desk offered me their version of a French 75 and it was alright. What really made it feel cheap and thrown together was that all of our drinks were served in plastic or paper cups when I had noticed some of the tables had glassware on them. The food took some time to come out. Also our first round of drinks: jack and coke + the french 75 = $30 before tip, however when my wife went to get another jack and coke and it cost only $10. So I’m not sure what is up with that. Overall, it was a pretty unfortunate experience considering how beautiful the hotel and skyline is! The employees didn’t really do anything wrong, I’d blame it on management.

My 2 friends and I ordered the cheese board. It was $18, and you get a pretty small board filled with basic deli cheese cubes -- cheddar, pepper jack, and swiss. You could sell several of these for that total price and still make a reasonable profit. The upcharge is ridiculous. You can get a huge wheel of brie at Costco wholesale for around $7. Now, if the cheeses were not cheeses you could buy at Walmart, and the portions were bigger, it would definitely be a nice display. This isn't just about price value, either. It's about fitting with the quality of the bar. If you have a rooftop bar with specialty cocktails, you expect selections such as manchego, brie, and goat cheese, not the equivalent of Kraft American. Furthermore, my friend asked the bartender what cheeses were on the board, and she was just told that it is just "assorted cheeses." I have really enjoyed going to Elyton multiple times over--it's one of my favorite outing locations--but this time, I was beyond disappointed.

The location, the view, and the atmosphere of Moon Shine is fantastic! From the elevator ride up with the glass ceiling panels to the views of downtown and the surrounding area from multiple outdoor areas, this bar has the POTENTIAL to be the best bar in all of Birmingham. The let down was the staff and service.... There were two people on staff covering the bar tending, bussing, cleaning and cooking pizzas for a bar that needed three to four on staff. Old glasses and plates were everywhere. The bar was sticky. Peoples food orders were wrong and or not made at all. Most importantly the drinks were not great and took way too long. The bartender was super friendly and had a great personality BUT it was way too busy for him to try to make conversation when there is literally a line of 6 to 7 people trying to order drinks. Just having a second bartender or a good bar back would have changed the experience completely. For this reason we could only give them 3 stars.

One of those places where the staff rush you as though you’re supposed to fall in line with the effect that they’ve got too much to do than to have anything other than your most prompt requests. There’s a tattooed up heavy set-ish girl working there who will get liquored up with the clientele she likes- but I’m thinking she may have a mood disorder cuz she seems to randomely flip her vibe on people from what I’ve seen. Just slighting random people for what seems to be no reason. I lost my fave necklace and visited early in the evening to se if it had been found- I saw her standing behind the bar, not doing anything, and began asking her if she recalled when I was there when all the sudden she just she rolled here eyes and looked to the side. I really didn’t know what to think- so I asked if she was okay and told her it seemed like she was going to pass out or something- to which she didn’t reply. Then another guy steps in front of her and asks what I want… I was totally off balanced and said “well, are you available for me to ask a question?” He said yea- and then all the bartenders looked at me, and I said “is something weird happening? What’s going on?” Then he made rushing hands and said “yea what do you want what do you want??” I asked about my necklace and they told me the downstairs desk handles lost and found. Was gonna eat there but felt like I was extremely unwelcomed for the fact that I guess I didn’t just pretend that the waitress didn’t roll her eyes and look away from me mid-sentence?? It was really weird. I don’t know if she was hammered or what but didn’t seem like they were upset to see me go. Shame because that balcony is so fun but I don’t reckon I’d go back. I travel all the time and find that staff is always a product of top-down energy. That was two for two so I’m thinking it’s one of “those places” where the jerk owner...

For anyone wanting to visit the roof top bar, first just know there is a line in the lobby where you have to wait for people to leave before you can go up. Once we arrived to the actual bar, I understood why- it's TINY. The service was HORRENDOUS. I honestly can't emphasize how truly terrible it was. One bartender looked like he had no idea why he was even there, two of the bartenders wouldn't stop chatting with each other even though the bar was packed with customers, and the woman bartender (who finally helped us after we stood at the bar for 15+ minutes) looked to be fed up with the whole thing. There's only one cash register, causing a huge backup in getting the customers paid up and out of the way. This was the biggest turn off for me and the main reason I'll never, ever go back to this horrible bar.

The outside was nice with a so-so view, but they put up a wooden cover above everyone's head, thus defeating the whole purpose of a rooftop bar. It was bizarre. The whole thing seemed very pretentious and the drinks were overpriced. Not to mention once we FINALLY got served at the bar, they were out of several drinks we were asking for. Just a poor experience with really...
