Sigh! Another black owned business that is overpriced and underwhelming.
I’m so pissed that I even have to write this review because I genuinely thought this place was a hidden gem when I found it. My first couple orders were top-notch. But lately the food has been extremely underwhelming. I think they changed chefs or management, but this food is NOT the same!
The last couple times I ordered the porridge it was horrible! Too much nutmeg and not enough milk & sugar. The plantains hard and dry. The ackee, tasteless. I’m just so annoyed by how they could even be ok with serving food the way they do and justify charging what they charge. Total was $49 for ackeesaltfish with side of callalo , large porridge, plantains, and festival. It’s beyond me how these are the type of people that are afforded the opportunity to own a business, when I know ppl who bust their butt selling 🔥 plates out of their home, wishing they could have a restaurant.
Just bad business. But this seems to be a theme with us. Can someone point me in the direction of a black owned business that has fair prices, fair servings, and “Consistently” provides good food that taste the same each time. I don’t think a place like this exist and if it does it’s...
Read moreThe young lady that greeted me from behind the counter was very friendly as soon as I walked in. Very kind. A woman came from the rear and greeted me as well, very nice and asked what I’d like to order. I made my choices: oxtails and the Barbie shrimp. I didn’t know what Barbie shrimp was and she explained it perfectly. Slightly barbecue sauce but spicy. She entered the meals into the system and the total was $60 😮 🫢 🫢 😳 . $60 for 2 meals. I tried them out because I was going to my usual Caribbean restaurant which is right down the street from them but they were closed and a passerby raved about Tropics and said they were way better. While I do agree that the meat seems fresh, the rice was clumped up and dry. The plantain was also very dry and you only get one! The container should have been full as it was a large but neither were. It was not worth $60 at all. I also purchased two freshly made juices and they were delicious. That brought the bill to over $80. I waited 45 minutes for my food to come out which points to their freshness but just not ideal for takeout. The pictures were taken before we took a bite. We just added our forks. I’d go back for juice but not...
Read moreOMG...I actually ordered Jamaican food from Caribbean Grill in Montclair before coming here but they didn’t have chicken soup which I was really in the mood for so I looked up some other Jamaican restaurants to try. I chose this particular one because the reviews were so great. The food I got was not what I was expecting. All the reviews talked about how this place had the most delicious Jamaican food in NJ.
The food was meh 😑. The curry chicken was not very flavorful at all, gravy seemed watered down actually neither was the oxtail. There are so many restaurants I’ve tried between NY and NJ and the food here did not come close to any. I am Jamaican and know what good Jamaican food from yard and up here taste like. Maybe they’ve changed their chef, maybe it was an off day 🤷🏽♀️ but today they did not live up to their reviews and I will stick to my tried and true Caribbean Grill from now on. But I gave them stars for their customer service because the lady who picked up the phone was very pleasant...
