I recently had the pleasure of visiting American Social in Boca Raton, and I cannot express enough how amazing my experience was, thanks in large part to the incredibly talented bartender, Kelly. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat.
Kelly's expertise and passion for mixology were evident from the first sip. Her extensive knowledge of cocktails and her ability to recommend the perfect drink based on my preferences were truly impressive. I went for Sunday brunch with a friend, and when we walked up there was left over food sitting on a table outside right at the front entrance. That party had left. No one bussed the table and it was attracting a lot of flies! No one was there to greet us, so we went inside and asked if we could get a table. The hostess made us walk back outside to the counter and asked where we wanted to sit. We asked to sit inside, so back inside we went. The place was not very busy at all and I right away noticed there were 3 inside high top tables that we also dirty/not bussed. Our waitress sat us, and I had a clear view of the table outside where the food was left out. I saw another person who looked to be a manager over by the bar area and she was messing with the TV''s. We literally sat at our table for 15 minutes and no one asked if we wanted anything!!! I counted 8 servers walk right by us, and no one took our order, absolutely nothing! While sitting there waiting at our table and counting servers ignoring us, I watched another manager go outside and look at the check that was left on the uncleared table outside. It appeared he was looking to see whose table it was. Being a manager, you would think he might clear it, but Oh No, he looked at the ticket and just left it all there for even more flies to collect. Again this is right at the front entrance, what a great first impression. After 20 minutes of no one coming to see if we wanted anything, the other tables were still not bussed, we decided to leave. Since I am in the hospitality industry, I decided to go to the back where I saw the manager person go and asked for a manger to at least tell them why we were leaving and not to have to write a bad review! But I found myself waiting even longer (5 plus more minutes) standing there waiting for a manager to come talk to me. I found another server and said I need a manger now or I am writing a bad review. She also said just a minute and I found myself now waiting at the front bar for one to come out! I decided to just leave with my friend and write their bad review that they absolutely deserve!!!!! ! There were about 6-8 people waiting at the front door as were were walking out and we told them not to stay as it was HORRIBLE SERVICE!! They all left with us. While dining there, my partner, who has autism, and I encountered several instances of unprofessional behavior that deeply impacted our experience.
Despite the restaurant operating at only 50% capacity, the service was notably inattentive, resulting in extremely long wait times and errors in our orders. Additionally, our server, Danielle, made a sarcastic remark towards us when we left an appropriate tip. She said: “Thank you so very much for your generosity.” And bowed to us. This left my partner feeling uneasy and triggered an autistic meltdown. It bothered me as well!
After discussing the entire situation, including the triggered autistic meltdown, with manager Joseph, he expressed apologies and offered his business card, inviting us to give the restaurant another chance by contacting him directly. But it was clear it was a standard response and that more comprehensive sensitivity training was needed among the staff because they lacked the necessary awareness in their interactions with customers with disabilities.
Unfortunately, our attempt to seek resolution with Danielle only exacerbated the situation, as she displayed dismissive behavior, lack of empathy and insensitivity towards my partner's condition.
Autistic meltdowns can be exceedingly distressing and painful, and the lack of understanding and empathy from the staff only intensified the situation. Despite our efforts to resolve the issue, the overall experience at American Social was disappointing and marred by unprofessionalism.
Every patron, regardless of their neurodiversity, deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. American Social should prioritize fostering a welcoming environment for all its customers, particularly in a location as prestigious as Mizner Park in Boca Raton.
