Basho Japanese Brasserie — Restaurant in Boston

Basho is the best! We live nearby and my husband and I are always telling ourselves that we are so happy to be by Basho. We eat here at least once a week. Their food is consistently delicious, the sushi is always fresh, service is fast, and the staff is always so kind. The portions are hefty, and both dining in and take out are consistently great experiences. The patio is also beautiful in the summer with gorgeous colorful real flowers!

We also have a super active toddler (who LOVES the food here), and the restaurant staff is always so understanding and sweet with him - they have plenty of high chairs and always interact with him as try to make him laugh. Once, we left behind one of his sippy cups and the restaurant carefully washed it and held onto it until we came back to eat again and brought it back to us (we didn’t even realize it was missing)! It’s rare to find restaurants that are happy to see kids dine in too!

A few favorite dishes:

Miso black cod. It’s to die for - lightly sweet, always so flaky, so tender, and so delicious. The marinade that they use is on point.

Nookie roll. My favorite sushi roll here - it’s hearty and loaded and lightly seared.

Chicken karaage. Our kid’s fave - he could eat these endlessly. Always hot, crunchy on the outside, but soft...

Our group had a lunch together. Near the end of the lunch, I ordered one takeout and paid separately. When I got the receipt, I found that I was charged “large party gratuity (18%)”. I pointed out the mistake because it was a takeout order and just one. The waiter then gave me a new receipt, but I found that the top was the price with “large party gratuity” removed, but at the bottom total price, it was still included. I questioned this, then he went to print out another receipt with the right price. However, when I checked my credit card payment and found that I was still charged the 18% extra cost. I am very disappointed at the dishonest attitude. It’s okay to make a mistake accidentally, but it’s not acceptable to purposely...

We came here on 4th of July. The restaurant was empty (only 2 other tables besides ours) and it still took a while for service and food to come up.

The food itself was so blah YIKES! It was our fault for going out on the 4th expecting to find decent food not to mention that the reviews on Yelp were already less than favorable.

That Shrimp dish was nasty and my Chicken Satay wasn't any good either nor was the peanut Thai sauce. With as much as food costs these days I get a bit miffed when the bill is expensive and you barely touch ANY of the dishes and have no desire to take any of it home... to me (as a foodie) that says A LOT.
