Bon Me is a quasi Vietnamese fast casual eatery. I got a sandwich (also known as bánh mì) and it tasted decent. The bread was soft and a little flakey, I've had worse. The fillings were largely true to form, pickled carrots and cilantro, but the pork was questionable. Even on the menu the pork is listed as "Chinese BBQ pork". I guess it is fusion, but why not serve Vietnamese style grilled pork? Shrug, it wasn't bad I guess. Then I got a so-called Vietnamese iced coffee. The cashier poured me a cup of some very near black coffee. I asked if I could get it with condensed milk and she had no idea what I was talking about (look up Vietnamese iced coffee if you have no idea either). This was also all somewhat pricey, at around $10-11.
I wouldn't go back. I don't care that it is not authentic, fusion is good if you're producing something you different with appreciable benefits--that's just not the case here. It's just expensive Vietnamese street food with minor tweaks that add little if anything.
Caveat: I know I'm white, but I used to live in Vietnam with my wife, whose family is Vietnamese. I grew up near the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam. I'm hardly an expert on Vietnamese food, but I do have some relevant knowledge...
Read moreThe food was pretty good and the price was not bad, but I came in with 4 people who all ordered the same thing, and it was like a freight train hit the kitchen. The restaurant wasn’t very crowded, there were maybe two people in front of us before we ordered, but somehow it seemed like 4 orders of pho was enough to bring the kitchen to a grinding halt. They were constantly asking each other how many more bowls they needed and the 4 of us were standing right there after the line waiting. It took longer than expected, but wasn’t an insanely long wait.
I don’t write restaurant reviews normally, it was just such a weird vibe that I got that I felt like I needed to post about it. Based on the rating I saw here I expected a lot more.
This may just be a personal thing for me, but I’d lose the red onions in the pho, I enjoyed the pho but now all I’m tasting is red onion. Maybe soak them in water before adding to cut some of the...
Read moreThe food was decent and fairly priced. However the 2 highschool staff that served our orders we're incredibly rude. There was no clear assistance and the cashier literally stopped taking my order to have a an unimportant conversation while my credit card was in my hand right in front of him for about 1 minute. I had to say something for him to pay attention. The food was somewhat spicy so we needed water. I asked where their water cups were and they told me to go to a wall. The other young employee gave me an condescending attitude and tone because I didn't know he meant the pillar. As I was about to get water and they took it away without saying anything to me. So I stood there waiting for them to fill it and they never did. I went to Starbucks instead to get water. Horrible service but...
