TLDR - Good food, great beer list tainted by the most condescending customer service experience of my life.
I was out with a group of 9 other young women. We picked City Tap House because we knew it had a good amount of space, we all appreciate good beer and for those of us who had been there before were happy with the food. Most of our night was great - we were seated early, they accommodated the two people in our party that dropped off our reservation and our waitress was attentive, gave us good recommendations etc.
At the end of the night we had to deal with the bill. Of course this is always a hassle with a group this large and we were aware of that so were happy to accommodate any needs the restaurant had. We decided to split the bill by amounts and wrote this all out on the back of the check. Some of us had included tip and some of us wanted to add it after the fact so the total we were asking to have charged was $30 higher than the amount of the bill. Our waitress explained to us that their system was unable to charge our cards more than the bill itself which was completely fine. We decided to just have one girl pay $30 less and then she'd tip that $30 after the fact. Easy right?
The waitress came back and that was all fine and dandy however we then realized that another check had mysteriously gone up by another $30. So we're back at that $30 amount over the bill. This was what we had originally wanted so we removed the tip on the low bill and were going to have those two girls even it out on their end. Check settled, outside to the patio for more drinks.
A man (who we later found out was the beverage director Greg when I returned to find out his name) now comes up to us asking if everything was alright. We said of course we had great service, food and drinks were fantastic. He responded by saying that he was happy to hear that and wanted to make sure since we had only left a $15 tip. Important to note there were maybe 10 or so other guests sitting outside that this man decided to publicly confront us on this. We insisted that we did not leave a $15 tip and we were vey happy with the service. He then responded with "Math is hard" and starts to re-explain the policy that our waitress clearly explained. We let him know that we understand that and explain how we accommodated that request. Clearly not listening to us he then says aloud "how do I find another way of explaining this?". I then ask him to show me the receipts in his hand (as we had double checked this again afterwards to make sure everything added up). I proceed to DO MATH in front of him to come to a total that is $50 short of the bill let alone the tip. Why? because he's missing the overcharged receipt. Not apologizing he leaves to go investigate further.
He then returns with the 8th receipt that he said they corrected. We proceed to then put the extra $30 tip back on the initial card we removed it from. You probably assume he apologized afterwards for embarrassing us for something we didn't do in front of other customers (I have clients that work in that area), for overcharging us on one check (thought that wasn't possible in your system?), for assuming that a group of 8 women can't do math, but no. He just acknowledged "that these are always awkward conversations" (do these come up a lot for you?). Ironically they have a sign in their restaurant indicating that the mens' room is to the left "because women are always right". Had we simply received an apology (even for one of the mistakes or completely inappropriate behavior) I would have felt better. But I guess apologizing is...
Read moreI like to patronize local establishments. When I receive good Service; I show my gratitude by tipping. When on Island vacations, I often tip more because they earn it. 1. The Pizza is what I get here. 2. There is never enough cheese on my Pizza. 3. Lately because of Credit card skimming device scams, seen more and more of the News in Massachusetts, I have started to pay w/ cash. I thought that it was perhaps just a random employee here ... The Pizza was $20.33. I gave a twenty dollar bill and a five dollar bill.
I went to pay and was asked "Do you want your change back"... Uhhhhh, yah, I called the order in and picked it up. I've been paying cash at Grocery stores, CVS, Pizza Hut, no one has been like, yah, do you NOT want your change back for an item or merchandise that you haven't purchased. Honestly, it's like those odd devices that popped up at Cafes, asking for a 20% tip for your already overpriced cup of coffee, that you have to add your own sugar and cream to, at a separate counter. Like .. what???
SOOOO, I went back twice after that, got the same Pizza, same price, paid with the same dollar denominations and was asked the same question... Staff is literally, visibly annoyed when I say, yes. I had not been sat nor served by wait staff. I always just pick up and go.
Well, between the mediocre pizza, attitude of staff, and repeated requests to keep my money, I won't be back. I'll just go to a chain restaurant where, you are given your total, then pay, and automatically handed your money back. The Pizza is not bad, I just have a bad taste in my mouth about...
Read moreTwo of us had a late lunch/early dinner. The restaurant interior was empty, one other table occupied on the patio. Definitely not too busy. Our server was friendly, helpful -- except my friend ordered a 20 oz beer. He brought a smaller size. She ended up paying a lot more for two than for one larger. No attempt by our server to remedy his error. Service was slow for an empty restaurant but friendly, so 4 stars for service. My tequila watermelon drink was good. Food arrived. Easy order: 1 burger, 1 veggie burger. Fries were great -- plump, very hot. Both burgers were cold, hers way overcooked, bacon missing. Sauce in small containers had been sitting so long it had "skin" on top. Server took everything back, no problem, very pleasant. New orders arrived. Burgers hot this time, but our fries were cold and were small, broken-up "ends," mostly potato peels. Zero whole fries in my serving. We'd seen white cheddar on the menu and asked if we could have that vs the described yellow cheddar. OK. Great. But when it arrived, the cheese looked and tasted like packaged, white Kraft American cheese. The beef burger was a genuine "medium," as requested. Not a fan of hot-spucy food; still, my veggie burger was pasty and bland. I could eat only half. With all the interesting restaurants in Seaport, we'd chosen this one because we like sours (beer type), and they do have a lot of sours and a large, varied drink menu. Our conclusion, as another reviewer suggested: Good place for drinks. Food, in our experience,...
