I recently attended an event with friends at Dorchester Brewing Company. M&M BBQ is located inside of the brewery.
M&M offers a small, yet solid selection of starters/shareables, salads, handhelds/sandwiches, barbecue, and a good selection of sides!
We decided to order the food to-go, as we wanted to head back to our hotel after a long day. I should’ve checked the order over prior to leaving. You should not have to do this, but I’d highly recommend it to avoid disappointment.
We decided to order the Pretzel to start off with. It is listed on the menu as a “salted and buttery 5oz pretzel” served with either brown mustard or smoked cheese. I wish I could let you know how it was. There was NO PRETZEL in my order.
I did receive the cheese sauce for said pretzel- which I found had a very odd taste to it. I’ve ordered beer-cheese with pretzels before and never noticed such an off taste.
Next, we decided to order the “Mass Ave” handheld/sandwich. It is a bratwurst braised in the brewery’s beer and it is topped with sauerkraut and honey mustard.
We both thought the brat was so-so. Then again, we may be a bit biased having come from the Midwest! I’m used to a solid brat. This just wasn’t it. The bun was similar to one you’d get a lobster roll served on.
The sauerkraut was tasty and plentiful. However, they just dump on the mustard which isn’t very good. They do this to disguise that the brat is tough, dry, fatty, and has zero taste to it. It was honestly a very poor attempt.
Lastly, we decided to share 1/2 a BBQ chicken. I’ll say, this is the only menu item that was somewhat worth it. The chicken was juicy and delicious. The meat was seasoned well and the sauce was not overwhelming. However, the sauce was extremely runny- as if it was watered down.
It doesn’t stick to or stay on/in the meat itself. My guess is it’s the recipe or it’s watered down. We decided to split a few sides to go with our chicken. We ordered the cornbread and the BBQ baked beans.
The cornbread was delicious. They come as cornbread “muffins” essentially. They were still warm and the butter melted just right! I think they were the best item in our entire meal!
Sadly, we also did NOT receive our BBQ baked beans, so I can’t comment on those! I’ll be honest, I’d pass on this place. It just isn’t worth spending your money and being so disappointed in the quality, taste, and service.
They do not check the orders for accuracy, so expect to get home missing part or all of the order. Neither of us were going to drive back, and they don’t offer delivery on any app locally.
I’d honestly give the place a solid pass. Save your money and save your disappointment. The place may be a good spot for those visiting the brewery. Aside from that, it isn’t worth it. That is my personal opinion and your experience may...
Read moreKeeping in mind that Boston hates you…M&M has the BEST Texas ribs…if you’ve never been to Texas. The BEST brisket…if you’ve never heard of brisket. The BEST collards…if, like Popeye, you love canned leaf vegetables. The BEST mac and cheese…if you’ve never had KD. The BEST coleslaw…if you love equal parts sugar to cabbage. The BEST pulled-pork…as long as you stuff it in a moister than the meat bun drowned with sauce and covered in pickled things after you’re hopefully drunk enough to forget every other pulled pork sandwich you’ve ever had. Hands down, M&M BBQ is the BEST barbecue* you’ve ever had as long as you’ve never had barbecue before. And if you can’t make it to M&M don’t worry, here’s how you can make it all at home. Take a few hot dogs and toss them over some red hot briquettes (compressed Kingsford, don’t you dare use lump wood) until the skin begins to blister and char. Voila! All the flavor and chew of the M&M ribs. Because M&M’s ribs have never seen this side of a smoker either. Got a chuck roast on your hands? Seer all sides then throw it in your Instant-Pot with a few dashes of liquid smoke until you have a pot-roast. Just like M&M! Because their brisket, served only pulled (which should be the first, last, and only necessary indication that this isn’t authentic smoked brisket), only needs pink butcher paper in order to wrap it up and throw it away. Then get yourself a can of collards, just like M&M does, a box of Jiffy, just like M&M, and a box of Annie’s Macaroni and Cheddar Cheese* (using only half the recommended amount of milk and butter and letting it sit on your counter for a few hours so it’s extra dry) and you’re set! Finally, make equal parts water to sauce mixes with whatever you have in your fridge and squirt those all over everything to hide the taste of the meats. M&M at home…except you won’t have the joy of being told you ordered wrong, paid too much, nor any kind of compensation or good-will extra by staff to make up for it. Enjoy!
to be fair, no where does M&M use the word barbecue, so BBQ could stand for anything. It’s best we don’t assume. ** apologies to Jiffy who make a stellar corn muffin mix — add some some grilled corn kernels, diced jalapeño, and a little bacon grease and you just baked fore-play (how M&M botched even this can only be described as an art form).
My partner and I went here for an early dinner after going to an expo in Boston. Wanted to grab a few beers from Dorchester and some food. Last time we came by here, we got a few snacks and thought they were solid. This time, not nearly as enjoyable. The chicken sandwich didn't deliver to expectations; fried okay but genuinely was tough to eat with lacked enough juiciness to it. The sauce and bun was excellent but the meat was just weak to what was listed on the menu. Far too stringy and tough for a family BBQ place with land standing customer popular recipes. The brisket sandwich was very greasy and oily with rather general and bland BBQ sauce and unnoticeable cheese that had been absorbed into the bun. The whole sandwich fell apart on us entirely so if you order this make sure to re-wrap it super tight. The fry basket was good, hand cut, wonderfully salted and yummy. The best way I can describe this food was if someone tried to make BBQ off a recipe but forgot to truly put the heart and love in it. The two individuals that were attending the kitchen seemed to be nice and I had no issue with the interaction other than a generic food service interaction (no complaints, no compliments).
I wish the experience had been better, I'll definitely be trying this again next time I'm in the area and hopefully I'll have a better experience. The food was not BAD, But for today? It wasn't it. I just felt like I've gotten more flavorful sandwiches from chain restaurants which was a sad feeling since I know this is a family run restaurant and I wanted to support it. Don't let this review discourage you from trying the food, hopefully it was just an off day. Please try their food to make your...
