I used to live 12 steps up the street from this restaurant; even then the times I went here were so rare as the prices are too high for the quality. I decided to give Shin La another go during my lunch break at work. Upon opening my katsu donburi after rushing back to work, I found a metal staple sitting in the chicken; if I wanted to be picky-- chicken was cubed not sliced. As stated above, it was my break, I had to eat. So, I tossed the staple and stomached what I could. My partner called the restaurant while I ate only to have them argue that according to the manager, they needed me to bring the food in today, tomorrow, or any day after. Then I called, the food in the trash by this point, they wanted to see a photo explaining, if they refund everyone who complains how will they have a business. To which I replied. "by not making mistakes like this". I expressed deep disappointment as I've given them multiple chances and this has by far been my worst and last experience with Shin La. Japanese is my comfort food and it's severely disappointing to not be believed for an...
Read moreFirst, the good parts: the waiter was very good, attentive and enthusiastic. Very accommodating with our specific dietary needs. And the food tasted great, although they didn't put out banchan with the bibimbap.
Now, the bad: the grunginess is out of control. Chopsticks set on the table were clearly cheap takeout chopsticks that had been washed many times & were still damp from the last wash. Teacups were so old that it's impossible to wash off the stains. And the whole restaurant needs to be refreshed (especially replace the carpet).
I've eaten in plenty of family-run Korean restaurants that are a little bit dingy. That's part of their charm. But it's just grimy in here.
Once you've resolved the cleanliness problem, how about introducing Brattleboro to stainless steel chopsticks that are popular in Korea? Easy to sterilize, last forever. And serve banchan with the Korean...
Read moreI visited this restaurant for lunch during the past week. I don't understand how people are posting positive things about the food. The number one issue is the cleanliness. I'm horrified I even stayed. The owners should be ashamed. No pride. The floors in front of the kitchen and bathroom filthy. Bathroom filthy. Carpet filthy. paint the walls. Dirty. The food was terrible too. No pride. I had the beef terriyaki. A lot of fat on the meat. Also, how are you reusing wooden chopsticks? I did not use them and asked for a fork (which I cleaned myself). It's not hygenic. The wood is porous. I also did not drink out of the water cup. It did not look clean. I asked for a coke and cleaned the can myself. I hope the owners read this and clean their restaurant. I hate to give such a bad review, but it was probably one of the worst restaurants I've...
