I really like Cafe HOT. It has very unique vegetarian options -- not all of which I love, but that just speaks to the diversity. My one complaint about food is that the single time I tried the coffee it was burnt, but it could have been an off day. I have a few more quibbles; as you read these keep in mind I have some experience working with people with disabilities, if something seems like a worthlessly small complaint (I don't mean to be overly critical). The menu is hard to parse. Its layout is fine, but it's a black on tan readerboard style sign, with small text, misspelled words, and backwards letters. It'll make anyone with less than stellar eyesight squint, but for a dyslexic, or someone whose developmental delay keeps them from reading as easily as other people, it's a nightmare. As far as I recall there isn't a plain text menu posted or available in the store -- if there is it isn't very prominent. That would be a useful inclusion. The bathroom features embossed red labels for various features, including where to dispose of feminine hygiene products. This would be mostly fine if the lighting fixture in the bathroom wasn't red, making the text on the labels hard to read. Again, a relatively small molehill in the grand scheme of things. Cafe HOT is a progressive restaurant in a progressive city, and I'd love to see them go just a little further and make it just a little easier for the large disabled community in Burlington and the rest of Vermont come to visit.
Again, I really like my meals at Cafe HOT -- I recommend any of their biscuit sandwiches with a beet lemonade, and perhaps a bonut...
Read moreAfter seeing so many amazing reviews about Café Hot, my husband and I knew we had to try it out on our last day in Vermont—and it absolutely lived up to the hype!
We ordered the biscuit, the egg sandwich, and the #8 chicken-fried sandwich, and every bite was incredible. The biscuit was perfectly flaky and buttery, while the #8 chicken-fried sandwich was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. It was honestly one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever had!
The vibe of the café is just as memorable as the food—fun, unique, and full of personality. One of the coolest details is their quirky dining table made from what looked an actual autopsy table. As much as we appreciated the creativity, we couldn’t quite bring ourselves to sit and dine at it—but it definitely adds to the café’s unforgettable character!
It’s, however, unfortunate to see businesses like this one struggling. Burlington officials should care more about supporting small businesses when making construction decisions. The ongoing construction—digging up the entire street—was clearly hurting all of the businesses in that area, including Café Hot.
We left wishing we had found this spot earlier in our trip because we would’ve gone back again. If you’re in Vermont, Café Hot is an absolute must-visit for delicious food and a...
Read moreCafe Hot is jaw-droppingly delicious!!! It is a must visit. I have had almost everything on their menu (DIY breakfast sandwiches, bing, secret biscuit sandwich, the "chicken," breakfast sammy, bonuts, mochi, etc.) and it is all DELICIOUS. The biscuits have the perfect combination of flaky and soft, the sauces are flavorful and as spicy as you want, and the eggs are fluffy but also customizable if you prefer a different style. The sweets will also blow your mind. The food is filling, which I love as a big eater, and the Raven is a great option if you want to go lighter.
I am a teacher in a Vermont public school and my colleagues and I have a Friday tradition of getting Cafe Hot! - it is the BEST way to end the week! The many people who I have suggested check this place out have loved it, as have visitors. Recently, some foodie friends from the SF Bay Area who are living in Philadelphia said it is the best food they have had on the East Coast.
Beyond the food, the owners, Travis and Alan are super good guys and the place exudes good vibes. They have done a lot of the work on the place themselves and are into sustainability (on track for a green restaurant certification, veggie-based meat, repurposed mirrors, etc. :)).
Cafe Hot is a gem and we are so lucky to have it in...
